Colorado blows it open
The Avalanche did not ease into the season. Colorado beat the Los Angeles Kings 8-4 in Denver on Wednesday night, with a four-goal second period turning a tight game into a rout.
Brock Nelson put Colorado ahead on a first-period power play, Brian Dumoulin pulled the Kings level, and Parker Kelly restored the lead late in the frame. Then Los Angeles took back-to-back penalties. Nathan MacKinnon scored twice in quick succession to make it 5-2, and the game was effectively gone.

Who did the damage
MacKinnon and Artturi Lehkonen each finished with two goals. Nelson added a goal and two assists, Kelly scored and set one up, and Nicolas Roy also found the net. Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 27 shots in goal.
Los Angeles got goals from Artemi Panarin, Trevor Moore, Joel Armia and Dumoulin, and briefly cut into the deficit. Darcy Kuemper made 21 saves but had little help once the penalties started piling up.
A good day for Bednar
It was already a good day for coach Jared Bednar, who had a new four-year contract extension announced Wednesday morning. The performance that followed suggested the Avalanche are in no mood to hand anyone a head start.
