NRL – Super Saturday: Dragons vs Knights
Super Saturday kicks off this week in Wollongong with a clash that could matter far more than the table suggests. The Dragons are still chasing their first win of the season and, in a mood that has grown steadily uglier around the club, this feels close to last chance saloon for something to spark.
Newcastle, meanwhile, arrive with more belief after that wild win over South Sydney, but the Knights are still hard to trust. Their attack can light up a game. Their ability to stay in control for 80 minutes? Not so much.
The Dragons need to show some life at last
The hammering from the Roosters before the bye left a mark. Shipping 62 points in an NRL game, especially on a stage as exposed as ANZAC Day, is not just a bad night. It is the sort of result that blows the lid off doubts already hanging over a team in trouble.
What stood out most was not even the final score. It was the slow-motion collapse as the game went on. For a few minutes, the Dragons looked capable of going with them. Then it all fell apart. Defensively, the gaps were everywhere, the line was a mess and the side lost its head completely.
Dean Young has had 15 days to try to put some order back into the chaos. Home turf and the break might help a little, at least mentally, for a group that looked utterly drained after eight rounds without a win.
There are still a few crumbs of encouragement. Kade Reed is learning fast at the top level, the Couchman brothers keep showing flashes up front and this young group at least gives the sense that there is a base there somewhere, buried under the wreckage.
But right now the Dragons need to prove they can simply hold together.
The Knights can score in a hurry… but they are still leaky
Newcastle come in off a bonkers 42-38 win over the Rabbitohs. In attack, the Knights were eye-catching at times. Kalyn Ponga’s return instantly brought tempo and shape back to the system, while Dylan Brown and Fletcher Sharpe are starting to build a real connection in the halves.
When this Knights side moves the ball quickly and gets some go-forward through the middle, it can hurt teams all over the park.
The issue is that Newcastle still hands out far too many chances. Even with a healthy lead at half-time against South Sydney, they let the game swing back into the balance after the break. That inability to shut games down remains the main flaw in a side that should be aiming higher.
Still, there is a clear difference in momentum between these two clubs right now.
Bradman Best is edging back towards his best, Ponga lifts the attacking ceiling of this team completely, and the pack looks capable of getting on top of a Dragons defence that has been blown apart lately.
If the Knights get moving early, this could get ugly for Illawarra.
Try it for $0.99.
NRL pick Dragons vs Knights
The Knights win by 5 points or more
The Dragons should at least come back with a better attitude after the break and the homecoming, but that may not be enough against a Newcastle side that can turn the heat up fast in attack.
The Knights are still flawed defensively, but their firepower looks far superior right now.
If Ponga and the spine get into gear quickly, Newcastle have more than enough weapons to crack this defence and pull clear on the scoreboard.
First, a word on our picks
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We share an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal from nowhere… and the script changes completely.
- Let us be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing really is. And yes, that means you can lose. At some point, you will.
- The smart move is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need for everyday life. And whatever you do, do not chase losses. That usually ends badly.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts to take over your day, if it winds you up or puts you under pressure, take a break. And if you need to, speak to a specialist support group. That is what they are there for.
- In the end, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never go away, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Important reminder: betting is illegal for minors and must follow the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast (money losses, family tension, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our picks are not a contract. They have no legal force. In plain English: you cannot rely on them to demand anything if a bet loses.
Live information
A pick is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But things change fast: a team list gets shuffled, like Newcastle’s, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns nasty… and the read can be out of date before kick-off. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your responsibility
Before you bet, check that betting is legal where you are. If it is not, that is on you, not us.
Responsible gambling first
We cannot say it enough: gamble in moderation. If you struggle to stay in control, get help sooner rather than later. We cannot be responsible for compulsive or excessive use of the information published on the site.
Legal age
mathodds content is for adults only. By using this site, you confirm that you are old enough under the law to bet.
