A cameo against Charlton, and nothing else
Kevin Danso got on the pitch on Wednesday. Barely. A handful of minutes in the Carabao Cup against Charlton, the kind of appearance that tells a defender exactly where he stands in the pecking order.
Sunderland saw an opening there. The Black Cats went in for the Austrian on a season-long loan, per the BBC. Tottenham said no.
Try it for $0.99.
Four centre-backs deep and still not selling
Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke both landed at the club this summer. Micky van de Ven signed fresh terms and took the captain’s armband. Cristian Romero moved on, and even that departure did not clear the runway for Danso.
The queue is long. He is at the back of it.
Which is what makes the rejection strange. A side stacking up defenders usually waves one through the exit door. Spurs did the opposite, and Danso now faces a season of scraps.
Sunderland have not gone away
Danso arrived permanently from RC Lens after an initial loan spell, and 37 appearances in a Tottenham shirt is what he has to show for the move. The 27-year-old wanted regular football.
Sunderland could come back in before the window slams shut.
