ATP: Buse becomes youngest ever Winston-Salem champion

Seventy-two minutes, start to finish

Half an hour. That is all the first set took.

Ignacio Buse ran through Arthur Fery 6-3, 6-2 in the Winston-Salem Open final overnight, and the whole thing was over in 72 minutes. The Peruvian, seeded third, broke the Brit three times in the second set alone.

Four of seven break points converted across the match. His forehand did the damage, and Fery never once looked settled behind it.

A record that had stood since 2019

Buse is 22 years and five months old. Nobody younger has ever won this tournament. Hubert Hurkacz held the mark from 2019, when he lifted the trophy at 23.

Second ATP title of the year for the Peruvian. The first arrived in Hamburg back in May, an ATP 500 and his maiden crown on tour.

He is also only the second Peruvian to win an ATP event on hard court, following Jaime Yzaga. The ranking points push him back toward his career best of world No. 31.

Fery walks away with something too

This was Fery’s first ATP final. He reached it without dropping a set, which says plenty about the week he put together.

The 24-year-old arrived in North Carolina off the back of a Wimbledon semi-final last month. Monday’s rankings will lift him to No. 33, a career high and the best of any British player right now.
