Sporting Lisbon vs Nacional: a one-sided rivalry that hasnt shifted since 2011 
Sporting have won 15 of their last 17 meetings with Nacional in all competitions, with the other two ending level. The last 10 have all gone the way of the Lisbon side.
The two clubs meet on Saturday at 20:30 local time at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, in round 5 of Liga Portugal. The numbers only sharpen the imbalance.
Sporting are second with 10 points from four matches, two behind a Porto side still unbeaten and yet to concede a goal. Nacional sit 11th with four points and a flat record of six scored and six conceded.
The Lions are also on a run of three straight wins, including a 4-0 rout at Rio Ave last weekend. All four goals came before half-time.
The visitors from Funchal are heading in the opposite direction, on the back of two straight defeats and with a vacant dugout. The club parted company with Joao Giao after just four league games.
History does the rest of the heavy lifting. Nacional have not beaten Sporting since 2011, and their last away win in this fixture dates back to May 2005.

Sporting: building momentum week by week 
Sporting have scored 12 and conceded five after four rounds, the best attack in the league.
The start was messy, though, with a 2-2 draw at Estrela Amadora after the Lions had led by two goals. It was the sort of warning sign that suggests a side capable of switching off once the job looks done.
They have tightened up step by step: first a 3-2 win over Vitoria Guimaraes, then a 3-1 success at Alverca. Comfortable? Not quite. But the margin for error was slimmer and they kept moving forward.
The 4-0 win at Rio Ave changed the tone completely. All four goals came before the break, and the defensive steel missing early on finally showed up. Flavio Goncalves opened the scoring, Geny Catamo added another, and Luis Suarez finished with a brace.
The Colombian, last season’s Golden Boot winner, had made a sluggish start himself but has now scored in two straight appearances for a total of three goals in that spell. Fotis Ioannidis returned from injury last weekend, but Suarez should keep the No 9 role.
On the injury front, Nuno Santos is still recovering from a muscle issue, Joao Simoes remains sidelined with a foot problem and Salvador Blopa is also out.
Borges is expected to stick with the same side that clicked in Vila do Conde. Altimira and Doumbia should hold the double pivot, with Catamo, Zalazar and Goncalves backing Suarez.

Nacional: two defeats, no manager and an ugly away record 
Nacional have four points from four games, with six scored and six conceded.
Their start was decent enough: a 2-2 draw at Santa Clara and a 2-0 win over Estoril Praia in Funchal. Then the wheels came off, with a 1-0 loss to Vitoria followed by a 3-2 defeat at Estrela.
That second defeat cost Joao Giao his job, with the club moving him on after only four league matches. Nacional head to Alvalade without a permanent manager, which hardly helps when trying to organise a trip of this size.
Another loss on Saturday would stretch them to three matches without a win, the first time that has happened since February. And this is about as awkward a fixture as they could have picked for a reset.
The away record is the real red flag: eight defeats in their last 11 league trips, with one win and two draws. Even the end of last season offered the same story, with just 14 points collected across 17 away matches.
The squad is still missing Ulisses Rocha, who is recovering from an ankle fracture, while Jose Gomes has not played a single minute this season.
There are at least two reasons for a sliver of hope against Sporting. William Kokolo, handed his first start last weekend, supplied an assist, and Pablo Ruan ended a long scoring drought with a goal against Estrela.

The straight home win is priced too short to offer any real value, so the goals market makes more sense. Sporting’s 12 goals in four rounds and Nacional’s six conceded over the same stretch point in the same direction.
The Rio Ave game is the clearest reference point: four goals before half-time and a Suarez back in business. On the other side, a club without a permanent manager and beaten eight times in their last 11 away league games does not look built to drag the tempo down.
Sporting’s 10 straight wins in this fixture finish the case. Take the Lions to win, with over 2.5 goals.
