South East Melbourne Phoenix vs Cairns Taipans: a short turnaround meets a three-game winning run
South East Melbourne Phoenix host the Cairns Taipans at John Cain Arena on Saturday 17 October, with tip-off at 8h30 Paris time. It is a Round 5 fixture in NBL27 and the early game of the Saturday programme.
The calendar shapes this game as much as the rosters. The Phoenix play their second game in three days after a Thursday trip to Brisbane, while the Taipans have had a full week to prepare.
Cairns arrive on a three-game winning run, the latest a 110-100 win at Illawarra. They sit fifth on the ladder at 4-3, and the Phoenix are ninth at 2-4.
The Phoenix lost 104-99 to Melbourne United in Round 4, a result that left them with a point percentage of 99.82. That figure is higher than the Taipans’ 96.39, which tells us the home side has been closer to competitive than the record suggests.
Both clubs have attacking talent and neither has a reliable defence. The recovery gap, plus the form gap, points the analysis toward the visitors.
Context from the previews adds one more factor. The venue is a home court for the Phoenix, but they have been described as capable of strong attacking basketball with uneven form.
South East Melbourne Phoenix Analysis
The Phoenix are 2-4 and ninth on the ladder. Their 104-99 loss to Melbourne United was a close game, and the overall point percentage of 99.82 sits above several teams with better records.
Earlier in the season the picture was more extreme. They beat Perth by 21 points in the Wildcats’ season opener, then lost 86-61 to Melbourne United while shooting 4-of-41 from three.
That swing between a 21-point win and a 25-point loss defines the Phoenix. The sources describe a team capable of strong attacking play but with uneven form from game to game.
Dash Daniels is one of the players who can swing a game, after posting 24 points and 12 rebounds in the first meeting with Perth. Three-point shooting remains the variable, since one cold night made the 4-of-41 figure possible.
The schedule is the larger issue. The team plays in Brisbane on Thursday and returns to John Cain Arena two days later, which cuts into recovery and preparation time.
The injury lists consulted show no confirmed absences for the Phoenix, which is a small positive. Depth should help manage minutes across the back-to-back stretch.

Cairns Taipans Analysis
Cairns are 4-3 and fifth on the ladder after three consecutive wins. They beat Brisbane 97-91 and then Illawarra 110-100 in Wollongong in Round 4.
The Illawarra win showed how the offence works. The Taipans shot 42-of-72 from the field and 18-of-38 from three, with 29 assists against 11 turnovers.
Jack McVeigh led the way with 32 points on 12-of-17 shooting, including 5-of-9 from three. Jonah Bolden added 20 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks off the bench in under 24 minutes.
Keanu Pinder scored 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting and had the best plus-minus of the game at +16. Jaylon Brown contributed 14 points and 9 assists, and Reyne Smith hit 4-of-7 from three for 14 points.
Starters scored 86 of the team’s 110 points, so the first unit carries the load. Malique Lewis hit the go-ahead three with 34 seconds left, a sign of late-game composure.
Cairns had a poor night on 30 September, losing 98-75 to the Breakers, and they still have Jaylin Galloway out with a shoulder injury. Luke Paul made his debut after an ankle problem, which adds depth.

Our prediction: Cairns Taipans win
The rest gap is the clearest edge in this fixture. Cairns have had a full week, while the Phoenix play for the second time in three days.
The form gap supports the same side. Cairns are on a three-game winning run with 110 points scored last time out, while the Phoenix have lost four of six.
The home court and the Phoenix’s attacking upside keep the margin small. We still back the Taipans on freshness and scoring balance.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute basket — and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses — that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation — that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
No commitment from us
Our predictions carry no contractual value. They have no legal standing. In short: you cannot rely on them to claim anything if a bet doesn’t come through.
Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and tip-off, a lineup can change (like South East Melbourne Phoenix’s, for example), a player picks up an injury — and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your responsibility
Before placing a bet, simply check that gambling is legal in your country. If it isn’t, that’s your responsibility, not ours.
