Shakhtar Donetsk vs AEK Athens Champions League prediction

Shakhtar Donetsk vs AEK Athens – Free Champions League Prediction – 14/10/2026

Shakhtar Donetsk vs AEK Athens: two of the meanest defences in the league phase Champions League

Half a goal conceded per game. That’s Shakhtar Donetsk’s average across their last ten matches in all competitions, with clean sheets in six of them.

AEK Athens aren’t far behind. The Greek side have lost just three of their last 20 UEFA matches, and they haven’t been beaten by anyone since the Greek Super Cup on 12 August.

The two meet on Wednesday 14 October at 21:00 Paris time, on matchday two of the Champions League league phase. The venue is Stamford Bridge, which Shakhtar are using for their European home games while they play in exile. It’s a home fixture on paper. In practice, it’s close to neutral ground.

The opening night left them in different places. AEK beat LASK 1-0 on 8 September, while Shakhtar came away from Eindhoven with a 1-1 draw against PSV. Three points against one, with a tough October ahead for both: Shakhtar still have a trip to San Siro to face Inter this month, and AEK host Manchester City on 20 October.

So what does this one hinge on? Not attacking flair. Shakhtar’s matches over the last ten have seen both teams score just 30% of the time. AEK’s away games have produced 1.8 goals on average. Break down the numbers and a clear profile emerges: two sides that are very hard to open up.

History adds another layer. Shakhtar have never lost to a Greek club, with one win and four draws in five meetings. Draws, in other words, have been the default setting when these two worlds collide.

Shakhtar Donetsk: top in Ukraine and six clean sheets from ten Shakhtar Donetsk

Arda Turan’s side sit top of the Ukrainian Premier League with 21 points from their first eight games. Three straight wins, the latest a 3-0 success at Veres-Rivne on Friday, tell you everything you need to know about their current rhythm.

The run before that reads 2-0 against Chornomorets Odesa and 3-0 against LNZ Cherkasy. Three games, eight scored, none conceded.

That’s the platform. Over the last ten matches, Shakhtar have won 80% of the time and allowed just 0.50 goals per game. Their expected goals against sits at 0.76, which says the numbers aren’t flattering them. This is a back line that’s earned its record.

It wasn’t always smooth. A 2-0 home defeat to Polissya Zhytomyr earlier in the run still takes some explaining. But it’s the exception, not the pattern.

Kaua Elias, 20, leads the line again after three goals so far this season. Alisson and Glesiker Mendoza are set to start behind him, while Irakli Azarovi and Eguinaldo are both ruled out injured. Losing Eguinaldo takes a bit of width away from the attack, and it’s not something Turan can easily paper over.

European pedigree isn’t the issue. Shakhtar reached the Conference League semi-finals last season before Crystal Palace knocked them out, and they’ve played 167 Champions League matches in their history. Their last league-phase campaign, in 2024-25, ended in 27th place though. That’s the bar they’re trying to clear.

AEK Athens: unbeaten since August, but without their top scorer AEK Athens

Eight goals in nine appearances. That’s what Barnabas Varga has given AEK this season, and he won’t be there on Wednesday. The 31-year-old is injured, and it’s the single biggest blow to Marko Nikolic’s plans.

Luka Jovic carries the load instead. He’s got six goals in ten appearances and he’ll start. Zini is the likeliest candidate to come in alongside him. It’s a capable pairing, but it isn’t the one that’s driven AEK’s season.

The form is still strong. AEK have won three in a row in all competitions, most recently a 3-0 win over OFI Crete on 10 October that kept them second in the Greek Super League, one point behind Panathinaikos.

The split between home and away is striking, though. At home over the last ten, they’ve won every game and scored 4.4 per match. Away, the win rate drops to 40%. Draws at Kifisia and Asteras Tripolis, both 1-1, came on the road. Scoring 1.2 per game away from Athens doesn’t suggest a side that will run riot in London.

Defensively, AEK travel well. They’ve conceded 0.6 per game on their travels, and their qualifying tie against Levski Sofia started with a 0-0 in Bulgaria before a 4-0 win at home. That’s a team that knows how to manage an away night.

Can they do it without Varga? Last season’s run to the Conference League quarter-finals, ended by Rayo Vallecano, showed they can grind in Europe. The question is whether they create enough.

Probable lineup Shakhtar Donetsk: Riznyk; Tobias, Bondar, Matvienko, Pedro; Marlon, Ocheretko; Mendoza, Isaque Silva, Alisson; Kaua Elias
Probable lineup AEK Athens: Brignoli; Rota, Moukoudi, Relvas, Pilo; Majer, Vitalis, Marin, Koita; Zini, Jovic

Free Champions League Prediction: Shakhtar Donetsk vs AEK Athens

Our prediction: Under 2.5 goals @ 2.00

Shakhtar have conceded 0.50 goals per game over their last ten, with six clean sheets. AEK concede 0.6 per game away from home and score only 1.2 on the road. Put those two profiles side by side and there isn’t much room for a goal-fest.

Varga’s absence matters here. AEK lose a forward who’s scored eight in nine, and their attack on the road was already far more modest than at home. Shakhtar’s “home” advantage is diluted too, playing in London rather than in Ukraine.

Add a head-to-head pattern with Greek clubs built on draws, and a group-stage context where neither side can afford to lose, and the case builds for a tight, low-scoring night. Under 2.5 goals at 2.00 is the value play.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation, that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
