Seattle Kraken vs Carolina Hurricanes: the NHL’s stingiest shot suppressors meet a Pacific side leaking 3.6 a night in Helsinki NHL

Pyotr Kochetkov won his first ten starts of the season, a Carolina franchise record, and he goes into Thursday’s game at 11-1. Behind a team that allows 22.6 shots per game, the fewest in the league, his numbers aren’t hard to explain: a 1.64 goals-against average across his first 11 appearances and two shutouts.

The setting is unusual. Seattle and Carolina meet at Veikkaus Arena in Helsinki on Thursday 12 November, with puck drop at 12:00pm ET (7:00pm local), the first of two regular-season games in the 2026 NHL Global Series Finland. The rematch follows on Saturday 14 November at 1:00pm ET. Seattle are listed as the home side for this one.

It’s Carolina’s first trip overseas in 16 years, and they arrive in about as good a shape as any team in the league. The Hurricanes are 14-3-2 and top of the Metropolitan Division after hammering Chicago 9-2 on Saturday, their sixth win in seven games.

Seattle are 9-6-1 and third in the Pacific, which flatters a defensive record that ranks among the worst in the NHL. The Kraken have conceded 3.6 goals per game (28th), allow 30.2 shots per game (30th) and kill only 65.1% of penalties (30th). They lost 4-3 at home to the Rangers on Saturday after their starter was pulled 10 shots into the night.

Both rosters carry Finnish interest. Sebastian Aho, Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Juuso Valimaki play for Carolina; Kaapo Kakko and Eeli Tolvanen for Seattle. Aho, from Rauma, leads the Hurricanes in scoring and will draw the loudest reception of the night.

Seattle Kraken: 30th in shots allowed and on the penalty kill, with two goalies above 3.00 Seattle Kraken

Seattle’s last ten games read 5-4-1, and the losses have been heavy. They went down 8-3 at Florida on 17 October, 5-1 at home to Minnesota on 24 October and 6-2 at Calgary on 30 October. Those three nights account for 19 of the 57 goals they’ve allowed in 16 games.

The goaltending hasn’t covered for the volume. Grubauer is 5-4 with a 3.07 goals-against average, and Daccord is 4-3 at 3.83. Daccord was the one pulled against the Rangers on Saturday after giving up three goals on ten shots, and Grubauer stopped 15 in relief.

At the other end, Seattle generate 25.6 shots per game, 26th in the league. They still score 3.4 goals per game, which means a high share of those shots are going in. Berkly Catton leads the team with 14 points (five goals, nine assists) and has a point in eight straight games, while Gaudreau has seven goals and Stephenson 11 assists.

Injuries have thinned the forward group. Jared McCann has been out since 25 October with a lower-body injury expected to keep him sidelined for around ten weeks, and Ryan Lindgren has missed time on defence since 8 October with an upper-body problem. Jacob Melanson is out indefinitely.

The Kraken did beat Carolina 2-1 in Seattle on 2 March 2026, the most recent meeting. Carolina had won 3-2 at home in January, and they’re 6-4 across the last ten games between the clubs.

Carolina Hurricanes: 33.3 shots for, 22.6 against and a goalie who started 10-0 Carolina Hurricanes

Carolina lead the NHL in both shots for (33.3 per game) and shots against (22.6). That gap of more than ten shots a night is the base of everything else: they score 3.8 goals per game (third) and concede 2.3 (third), figures taken before Saturday’s 9-2 win over Chicago pushed both further in their favour.

Most of their wins haven’t been close. In their last ten games they beat Winnipeg 7-0, St. Louis 4-0, Vancouver 6-3, the Islanders 5-3 and Chicago 9-2. Only two of their seven wins in that run came by a single goal, 3-2 against Columbus and 2-1 against Boston.

Aho went into Saturday with 23 points and added a goal and two assists against Chicago. Stankoven has 11 goals, Svechnikov scored twice on Saturday, and Blake has a nine-game point streak with four goals and seven assists in that spell. Kotkaniemi has ten points in 17 games.

The penalty kill runs at 85.0%, eighth in the league, against a Seattle side whose own kill is 30th. Kochetkov faced only 20 shots against Chicago and stopped 18.

Jordan Staal tore his calf on 11 October and remains on injured reserve, though he skated on Saturday and wants to play in Finland; Brind’Amour has called it a decision for after the flight. Taylor Hall was listed out in late October, while Nikishin made his season debut on Saturday with a goal and an assist.

Probable lineup Seattle Kraken: Not announced at time of publication. Grubauer is the likelier starter after relieving Daccord on Saturday.
Probable lineup Carolina Hurricanes: Not announced at time of publication. Kochetkov has played 12 of Carolina’s 19 games.

Our prediction: Carolina Hurricanes -1.5 (puck line)

We’d rather take the puck line than the moneyline here, which was trading around 1.41 to 1.47 on the prediction markets we checked and gives little back. Carolina have won by two goals or more in five of their last seven wins, and Seattle concede more shots and kill fewer penalties than almost anyone in the league.

The case against us is the trip itself. A Global Series game with a midday ET start, after a long flight and a week of events in Helsinki, can blunt a favourite, and Seattle won the last meeting 2-1. We’ve weighed that and still come back to the shot numbers: Carolina outshoot opponents by more than ten a night, Seattle are outshot by almost five, and Kochetkov’s goals-against average is more than a goal lower than either Seattle goalie’s.

Seattle have allowed four goals or more in six of their last ten games. Against the league’s highest-volume attack, we expect another night where the Kraken spend most of it in their own zone, and an empty net late in a two-goal game would only add to Carolina’s margin.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

No commitment from us

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
