MLB: Schlittler one-hits the Mets, Yankees a win from October

One clean hit all afternoon

A Brett Baty double with two outs in the fifth. That was the whole of the Mets’ day against Cam Schlittler on Sunday.

Six innings. One hit. Eight strikeouts. Two walks.

The Yankees won 2-0 in New York and closed out the Subway Series the way they wanted to.

Schlittler moves to 14-6. His ERA drops to 1.949, which nudges him past Jacob Misiorowski of the Brewers at 1.952. The right-hander now leads the majors in the category.

Two solo homers, and that was the entire offense

New York did not need much else.

Ben Rice opened the game with a home run, his third career leadoff shot. Austin Wells added one in the third.

Christian Scott deserved more from the other side. Two runs, three hits, two walks, seven strikeouts across six innings, and he falls to 4-5.

Aaron Judge is still hunting. 0 for 3 on the day. Since coming off the injured list, he is 3 for 17.

The magic number is down to one

Eighteen wins in their last 26 games. The Yankees are moving.

Their magic number to clinch a playoff spot sits at 1. One win, or one slip from the teams chasing. That is all that is left.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Lawrence Butler pushed the Athletics past Seattle 8-7 with a two-run homer in the ninth, nobody out. Randy Arozarena had already gone deep twice and driven in four for the Mariners.

Tampa Bay hammered Houston 14-4 and wrapped up a 15th series sweep this season, the most in the majors. Jonathan Aranda hit two homers, and Freddy Peralta went five no-hit innings.

Miami stunned the Dodgers 6-4 on Agustin Ramirez’s two-run homer in the ninth.
