One play, and New Orleans went for the win
Detroit beat New Orleans 31-30 in overtime on Sunday at home. It came down to a single snap.
The Lions had the ball first in the extra period. Jared Goff found Amon-Ra St. Brown from 4 yards. 31-24 with 5:04 on the clock.
Tyler Shough marched the Saints straight back and finished the drive with an 8-yard throw to Noah Fant. 31-30. New Orleans left the tying kick on the sideline and went for two. Shough’s pass into the end zone hit the turf.

156 yards on the ground, 410 through the air, one point between them
Jahmyr Gibbs ran Detroit’s offense. 156 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Goff added two touchdown passes, both to St. Brown.
Plenty of the numbers leaned the other way. Shough put up 410 passing yards and three touchdowns. Chris Olave caught 10 for 182. Very few quarterbacks clear 400 in a season opener.
New Orleans lost it somewhere simpler: three turnovers. Shough gave the ball away three times before he settled. In a one-point game, each of those shows up on the scoreboard.
He was also the reason there was overtime at all, hitting Juwan Johnson from 9 yards late in regulation.
Detroit did not look dominant, and won anyway
The Lions open with a win they nearly handed back at home. Grinding out a tight one without ever taking control is not how this team used to operate three seasons ago.
Gibbs is still the engine. His 156 yards held Detroit together every time the passing game stalled.
For the Saints it stings. Four hundred and ten yards, 182 of them to Olave, a comeback, overtime forced, and nothing in the win column. Shough showed what he can do on Sunday. He showed the other thing too.
