San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks head into a tricky third act
Two games in, and the series has already produced two very different scripts. Arizona opened with an 8-0 thumping, only for San Diego to hit back with a far more controlled 4-1 win. On that evidence, it is hard to know which version of these two line-ups turns up for game three.
The pitching matchup does not exactly scream confidence at first glance. Griffin Canning and Merrill Kelly both carry ERAs well above 5.00. Even so, both offences have been up and down, and the 9.5-run line leaves some room to work with. The starters will need to be better than their numbers suggest, but a more contained game is still very much on the table.
San Diego Padres : back it up without needing an offensive shootout
San Diego responded well after taking that 8-0 beating in the opener. The Padres did not try to answer with a flood of runs. Four were enough, backed by much cleaner pitching and a game they kept under control throughout.
That win sums up this team pretty well right now. The offence has talent, but it does not always show the consistency needed to put together a run of big nights. Even against a struggling starter, San Diego can go quiet for long stretches and not really look dangerous.
Griffin Canning is, of course, the main threat to San Diego. His 6.71 ERA and 1.61 WHIP tell the story of a miserable season. The right-hander has to stay out of trouble, avoid the walks and, above all, stop Arizona from stringing together contact in the same inning. A few clean spells from the Padres could be enough to keep this one in check.
Arizona Diamondbacks : find some efficiency without going over the top
Arizona went from eight runs to one in the space of 24 hours. That swing sums up the Diamondbacks’ problems this season. The offence can catch fire in an instant, but it still struggles to do it again game after game.
The matchup with Canning does offer chances. Even so, the visitors will need to be patient rather than trying to copy their opener straight away. Free passes could come, and Arizona would be better off waiting for the opposing pitcher to make the mistakes.
Merrill Kelly has also had a rough season. His experience still matters, but his 5.71 ERA and 1.56 WHIP show he is giving up far too many baserunners. Against an inconsistent San Diego Padres’offence, though, he does have a chance to settle things down a little.
Try it for $0.99.
MLB Prediction : San Diego Padres vs Arizona Diamondbacks
Under 9.5 runs in the game
The numbers for both starters naturally point towards an attacking game. Canning owns a 6.71 ERA, Kelly is at 5.71, and neither man offers much in the way of reassurance right now. But the line has already priced in plenty of that risk.
The first two games of the series have produced 13 runs in total, an average of 6.5 per game. Arizona has just dropped back to one run after its strong start to the series, while the San Diego Padres remain a side that can win without blowing up the scoreboard.
So the play leans toward a game where Canning and Kelly simply limit the damage, rather than dominate. With two offences too inconsistent to trust fully and a total set at 9.5 runs, the under looks the best angle for game three.
in your pocket.

First, a word on our predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We are offering an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal from nowhere… and the whole script changes.
- Let us be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks “obvious”, it is never that simple. And yes, that means you can lose. In fact, you will at some point.
- The best approach is to keep things sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need to live on. And above all: do not chase losses, because that rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a bit of fun, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your life, if it winds you up or puts you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist organisation. That is what it is there for.
- In the end, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never go away, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Essential reminder: betting is forbidden to minors and must comply with the law in your country. Gambling can quickly get out of hand (money problems, family tension, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They have no legal force. In plain English: you cannot use them to claim anything if a bet does not land.
Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know when it is written. But in the meantime, a team sheet changes, a player gets injured, the weather turns… and the analysis can quickly be out of date. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your role
