Cardona, Ballo, Breum: the Greens cruise on
Saint-Etienne beat Clermont 3-1 on Friday night at Geoffroy-Guichard. A week after their demolition job at Sochaux (0-3), the Greens backed it up and kept hold of top spot.
Irvin Cardona opened the scoring in the 42nd minute, set up by a backheel from Thierno Ballo. It was his third goal in two games, after his brace at Bonal. The Malta international, capped eight times, found his rhythm straight after the restart.
Ballo doubled the lead in the 54th minute, his first goal in the Saint-Etienne shirt, pouncing on a loose ball in the box. Jakob Breum, the Danish signing who had already caught the eye against Sochaux, wrapped it up in the 71st minute. Ousmane Diop grabbed a late consolation for Clermont in the 89th.
Lucas Stassin, who has been tipped to move on, stayed on the bench for the full game. Zuriko Davitashvili came on in the second half.
