NBA: Russell Westbrook retires after 18 seasons

Eighteen seasons, seven jerseys, one last word

Russell Westbrook is done. The nine-time All-Star confirmed his retirement in a video posted to his social channels, narrated by actor Michael B. Jordan. Eighteen years in the league, seven different jerseys along the way: Oklahoma City, Houston, Washington, the Lakers, the Clippers, Denver, and finally Sacramento, where he wrapped up this past season.

The clip asks him one thing. “Now that you’ve decided to walk away on your own terms, what are you most proud of?” That last phrase says plenty about a player who did it his way, year after year, roster after roster.

The triple-double king walks off with the record in his name

The résumé is stacked. A place on the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team. The 2017 MVP. Nine All-Star nods, nine All-NBA selections, an Olympic gold with Team USA. And the one nobody is catching for a while: the all-time career triple-double record, his and his alone.

The counting stats sit in rare air too. 27,176 points. 9,025 rebounds. 10,351 assists. Only one other man, LeBron James, has ever paired 25,000 points with 10,000 assists.

Even in the final act, the production never dried up. Across 64 games in Sacramento, 58 of them starts, Westbrook averaged 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 6.7 assists. Solid numbers for a guy closing the book on nearly two decades near the top of the sport.
