NBA: Westbrook retires after 18 seasons

An 18-season career comes to a close

Russell Westbrook has announced his retirement from the NBA after 18 seasons, in a video shared on his own channels and narrated by actor Michael B. Jordan. The former point guard, who just wrapped his final season with the Sacramento Kings, suited up for seven franchises in his career: Oklahoma City, Houston, Washington, the Lakers, the Clippers, Denver and Sacramento.

At one point in the video, he’s asked: “Now that you’ve decided to step away from everything on your own terms, what are you most proud of?” A fitting way to close out a career he shaped entirely on his own terms, season after season, jersey after jersey.

A resume few can match

A member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team, the 2017 MVP, a nine-time All-Star and nine-time All-NBA selection, and an Olympic gold medalist with Team USA, Westbrook leaves the league holding the all-time record for triple-doubles. He finishes his career with 27,176 points, 9,025 rebounds and 10,351 assists, making him only the second player in league history after LeBron James to clear both 25,000 points and 10,000 assists.

In his final season in Sacramento, he still averaged 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 6.7 assists across 64 games, 58 of them as a starter, solid numbers to close out a career spanning nearly two decades.
