NFL: Roger Goodell stays on until 2030, tied to the new collective bargaining agreement

Four more seasons for the commissioner

The NFL’s 32 franchises were told this weekend that Roger Goodell has wrapped up a fresh four-season extension, keeping him in place through the 2030 season and officially running until March 31, 2031, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

By the time that deal ends, Goodell will be 72 and will have spent 24 years running the league, a stretch of longevity no other commissioner in American pro sports is coming close to right now.

A date that is no coincidence

The March 31, 2031 deadline lines up exactly with the current collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players’ union, which also expires in March 2031. With both clocks set to end together, Goodell will be in charge for the whole of the next round of negotiations, a job he already knows well after overseeing the last deal.

Appointed commissioner in 2006, Goodell has ridden out several major league crises while also presiding over the NFL’s relentless rise in revenue. The league remains the most lucrative in US professional sports.
