Two giants, one answer
Rodri has spoken. This morning, the Spain midfielder gave his side of the summer transfer saga in an interview with Mundo Deportivo. After seven seasons at Manchester City, he joined Barcelona this summer, and had two clear paths in front of him. Barca on one side. Real Madrid on the other.
He picked Catalonia. And he is not hiding the fact it was a tough call. “It wasn’t an easy decision. Saying no to Real Madrid is never simple, especially after the incredible welcome they gave me,” he admitted.
The backdrop gives the story real weight. Rodri left Manchester City after seven years and a Ballon d’Or he won in 2024. At 30 and beyond, he wanted a fresh challenge. Spain’s two biggest clubs were after the same player at the same time.

Mourinho picked up the phone
Real Madrid did not hold back. Jose Mourinho contacted Rodri directly to lay out his plan. The conversation left an impression.
“He made it clear he wanted me there and explained what I could bring to the team. It was a very positive exchange. I made my decision for sporting reasons, based on what motivated me most and my belief that it was the place where I could improve the most and grow as a player,” the Spaniard said.
The detail that says plenty: once he had made up his mind, Rodri called Mourinho back to thank him. No drama. No fallout.
Deco and Flick swung it
Two men tipped the balance on the Catalan side. Hansi Flick and Deco. “Deco’s leadership and Hansi’s made the difference,” the midfielder said. The German coach’s demanding, forward-looking message landed exactly as intended.
The approach did too. “At no point did they put any pressure on me. Everyone said they wanted to bring me into the squad, work with me and see what I could add. I really appreciated their approach and the fact they weren’t frantic,” he added.
Rodri also brushed aside the idea that money, or the chance to stick it to Real, drove the move. “I have always based my decisions on sporting merit, on where I believe I can win, be happy and, above all, improve as a player. That’s why I chose Barca.” The summer dragged on. The verdict is now there in black and white.
