Football: Rodri agrees Barcelona move as City accept €50m bid

Barca land their midfield man

FC Barcelona and Manchester City have reached an agreement for Rodri. The Catalan club have put in a 50 million euro bid, accepted by the Sky Blues according to RAC1. Only a few documents are left to sort before it is made official. Rodri is expected back on August 12 for pre-season training in Catalonia.

The deal moved fast. The Spanish midfielder had made Barca his first choice and turned down Real Madrid, long tipped as his next stop. He even took time to listen to a call from Hansi Flick, who laid out his role. The contract agreement with the Blaugrana did not hang around.

City tried to keep him. The English club offered him a new deal, even though his contract ran until 2027. Rodri made it clear he wanted a fresh start.

A 50 M€ transfer

Barca’s first offer, thought to be 45 million, was turned down. City had been hoping for between 60 and 65 million. The second bid, at 50 million, was enough. Add-ons may well have helped bridge the gap.

Rodri arrives with serious status. The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner was named best player at the last World Cup, won by Spain. At Camp Nou, he will link up with Pedri and Dani Olmo, his international teammates. The trio has formed much of La Roja’s spine.

What it means in midfield

The signing answers a clear need in the middle of the pitch. Flick gets a player who can set the tempo and handle the ball recovery. For City, there’s a major hole to fill, and they are already looking at other midfield options. The question now is how Rodri fits into the Catalan setup once the paperwork is done.
