Three new faces up front
Washington beefed up its offensive line on Saturday. The franchise confirmed the arrivals of centre Daniel Brunskill, tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere and guard Max Scharping. Three veterans brought in during training camp, with the aim of adding some much-needed depth to a key area.
To make room, the Commanders released receiver Chris Hilton Jr. and guard Timothy McKay. Defensive tackle D.J. Davidson, meanwhile, was placed on the reserve/retired list. Nothing flashy on paper, but it does tell you how the staff views its roster depth.

Different paths to the same shot
Brunskill, 32, is heading into his seventh season in the league. He played 16 games, starting five, for Miami last year after spells with the 49ers from 2019 to 2022 and then the Titans in 2023 and 2024.
Petit-Frere, 26, arrives with a question mark hanging over him. He did not play last season after being cut by the Titans and then San Francisco. Across his first three seasons, all with Tennessee, he made 34 appearances and 28 starts. The tools are there, but the consistency hasn’t followed.
Scharping, 29, brings experience, with 81 games and 33 starts across six seasons with Houston, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. A torn ACL kept him out for the whole of last season.
A bet on depth
The message is plain enough. Washington isn’t chasing stars here, it’s chasing competition and quick answers up front. Between them, the three veterans have more than 60 NFL starts, a decent chunk of know-how when injuries start biting in preseason.
The bigger question is production. Two of the three are coming off a blank season, or close to it, one because of a serious injury, the other because nobody had him on the books. The offensive line has too often shaped how this franchise’s seasons have gone, and camp will show which of these men can stick. It’s a cautious move, almost defensive in tone, but that fits a start to the season where depth matters just as much as talent.
