MLB: Robbie Ray makes his Padres debut against Houston

A move sparked by one frustrating night

The Padres had a simple idea. Stop getting shut down by Robbie Ray. Go and get him.

On July 30, the San Francisco left-hander blanked them in a 4-1 loss. Hours before the trade deadline, San Diego made its move, and Ray was suddenly pulling on a new uniform. Friday night he makes his first start in those colors, against the Houston Astros, opening a six-game homestand.

A pitcher running hot

The numbers jump off the page. Ten wins, six losses, a 3.08 ERA. Seven wins across his last 12 outings. One earned run or fewer in nine of them. Six innings or more in six of his last eight starts.

All of it for a team going nowhere. The Giants were 14-8 when he took the mound before sliding toward 90-plus defeats on the season. A former Cy Young winner, crowned back in 2021, deserved better company. San Diego has handed him a real reason to care again.

A tricky first test

Houston has never treated him kindly. Three wins, three losses across nine starts, but a 6.86 ERA and 11 homers surrendered in a shade over 40 innings. Hardly the draw he wanted.

The Padres sit one game behind the Diamondbacks for the last National League Wild Card spot. Every game bites now, and Ray knows exactly what he stepped into.
