Eighteen months, gone in an evening
The loan was supposed to run until the middle of 2027. It lasted until Friday night.
River Plate have torn up their agreement with Kendry Paez, according to several Argentine outlets including ESPN. Fourteen appearances since he arrived in January, then a steady drift out of the matchday squad through the back half of the season. The attacking midfielder had worked out where he stood long before the club made it official.
An Instagram story sharpened everything. After River’s Copa Sudamericana exit, Paez posted a black background with a gritted-teeth emoji, and inside the club it landed as a dig. He has since pushed back on that reading, saying the post was aimed at nobody in Buenos Aires and that he was simply backing goalkeeper Santiago Beltran, who had taken the worst of the shootout.

The teenager who was ahead of everyone
Rewind three years and the picture could not look more different. A product of Independiente Del Valle, Paez became the youngest player and the youngest scorer in Ecuadorian top-flight history. He was pulling on the Tri shirt while players his age were still in reserve football.
Chelsea saw it coming in 2023. The Blues locked the deal down early, arranging his arrival in London for his 18th birthday and seeing off a queue of clubs who had spotted the same thing.
Then came the part nobody plans for. RC Strasbourg, another BlueCo club, took him last season. There were flashes. There was never a settled starting role, and by this summer Chelsea had seen nothing that convinced them to fold him into the senior squad.
Back to London with the window closing
Paez now flies to England to sit down with Chelsea and work out where he goes next. Deadline day is days away, which turns a delicate conversation into an urgent one.
English reports have Premier League and Championship clubs already circling. Nobody doubts the talent. What has repeatedly failed to arrive is a shirt he can call his own, and the minutes that come with it.
