Super League: Panathinaikos land Imran Louza in 7 million euro Watford deal

Watford bank seven million for a Nantes graduate

Seven million euros. That is roughly what Watford will collect for Imran Louza, and the paperwork went through on Friday evening.

The Moroccan midfielder is a Panathinaikos player now. The Athens club confirmed it themselves, in a statement that left little room for doubt.

“Panathinaikos announces the signing of Imran Louza. The 27-year-old Moroccan midfielder has joined the Greens from English club Watford and has signed a three-year contract,” the Greek side said.

Three years. That is the commitment on both sides.

Athens is turning into a Ligue 1 reunion

Louza learned the game at FC Nantes, where he broke into the first team before heading across the Channel to Watford. He lands in Greece as a Morocco international with Premier League minutes on his record.

Familiar accents await. Moussa Sissoko and Pedro Chirivella both came through Nantes, and Anass Zaroury was schooled at Lens. Four players in one dressing room shaped by French football, which is not something you find in many squads outside France.

Fourth place was not the target

Panathinaikos finished fourth in the Greek Super League last season. Everything they have done in the transfer market since points at closing that gap rather than defending the position.

Louza gives them a left foot capable of prising a defence apart, plus the kind of top-flight mileage that tends to matter in European qualifiers. How quickly he forces his way into the XI is another question entirely.
