Ligue 1: Rennes agree Seko Fofana loan back to Porto

Twenty million euros, and not a cent coming back

Seko Fofana is on his way out of Stade Rennais again. Foot Mercato reports that the Breton club and FC Porto have shaken hands on a straight one-season loan, no option to buy attached, with the Ivorian midfielder due for a medical next week.

The structure suits everyone except Rennes. Porto pay nothing and get back a player they already know inside out. Rennes shave money off the wage bill without recouping any of the fee.

Neither club has said a word publicly.

He already knows the walk to the Dragao dressing room

This is not new ground for him. Fofana joined Porto on loan last winter, barely a year after arriving in Brittany, and racked up 16 appearances across all competitions with three goals. That was enough for the Portuguese board to come back this summer.

Now 31, he gets a full campaign rather than half of one. He also gets minutes, which is the part Rennes stopped offering.

A 20 million euro signing that never took

Rennes wrote one of their bigger cheques of recent years to pull him out of Al-Nassr. The football never justified it.

The former Lens captain never settled into the Rennes midfield. Twelve months in, he was already in Portugal. He is walking back through the same door now, and the club gets nothing for it.

A week remains in the window. Rennes host PSG on Sunday night in matchday two.
