Football: Renard returns to take charge of Ivory Coast

A familiar face back in the Elephants’ dugout

Herve Renard is back. The Ivorian federation announced on Tuesday, through its social channels, that the French coach will take charge of the national team. He replaces Emerse Fae.

This is not new ground for him. Renard already ran the Elephants from 2014 to 2015, and that spell ended with silverware, the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

From one rescue job straight into another

Renard is 57. He lands in Abidjan just after a short, messy stint with Tunisia, where he was thrown into the 2026 World Cup at the last minute with barely any time to shape the squad his way.

The profile fits a pattern African football knows well. Bring in a coach who can settle a dressing room fast, restore some structure, and stop the drift before it takes hold.

Chasing the continent’s crown once more

Fae left the bench having delivered the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, so the bar sits high. Ivory Coast are betting that Renard’s experience keeps that momentum alive. Now everyone waits to see what his plan looks like before the next continental tests.
