Monfils keeps pushing the limits

Gael Monfils simply refuses to fade. On Wednesday night the Frenchman saw off Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round of the Canadian Open in Montreal. The match wrapped up just before midnight local time.

At 39, the Paris-born veteran is still a live threat on tour. He held serve. He cashed his break points when they arrived. Majchrzak never found a way to wrestle back control.

Monfils owned the big moments. He mixed his patterns, broke up the rhythm and pulled his opponent into errors once the rallies stretched out. Two sets, two decisive breaks, done.
