A deal that resets the market for defensive linemen
The Eagles have gone big. Philadelphia has extended Jalen Carter for four years and $152 million, a number that can climb to $160 million, with $106 million guaranteed. The new deal runs through 2031.
At an average of $38 million a season, Carter is now the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history. He clears the mark Jeffrey Simmons set earlier this year on the two numbers that actually matter: average annual salary and guaranteed money.

A franchise betting on its youth
None of this came out of nowhere. Drafted ninth overall in 2023, Carter turned into one of the league’s most disruptive interior linemen inside two seasons. Philadelphia is locking down a young defensive spine that already knows how to handle a big stage.
The structure tells the story. A $22.5 million signing bonus, then option payments spread from 2027 through 2031. The Eagles are smoothing the cap hit to keep room around their star.
A message to the rest of the league
Every record deal drags the next one higher. After Simmons, Carter is the new benchmark, and the next elite interior rushers will sit at the table with that figure in their heads. Then comes the part that settles it, the field, where this kind of money gets judged in sacks and pressures rather than accounting columns.
