NHL: Detroit scores twice in 45 seconds to sink Florida

Two quick goals decide it

The Red Wings and Panthers traded goals for most of Monday night in Sunrise. Detroit settled it in the third period, scoring twice in about 45 seconds on the way to a 5-3 win.

Carter Mazur started the scoring with his first NHL goal, in his 18th career game. Sam Reinhart pulled Florida level after a Detroit turnover. Alex DeBrincat restored the lead in the second on a 3-on-1 break, set up by Viktor Arvidsson, and Aaron Ekblad evened it again with a short-handed rebound goal.

The third period breaks the pattern

Justin Faulk put Detroit back in front on the power play with a shot from the point, screened by Michael Rasmussen. Michael Brandsegg-Nygard added another about 45 seconds later, assisted by Lucas Raymond. Sam Bennett cut it to 4-3 with 3:20 left, but Emmitt Finnie sealed it with an empty-netter in the final seconds.

Daniil Tarasov made 23 saves against the team he used to play for. Jacob Markstrom stopped 24 for Florida in his first game since October 17, after an injury in practice cost him five games. The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the Panthers.
