Real Sociedad vs Deportivo La Coruna: 13 goals conceded meets a promoted side that scores everywhere it goes
Thirteen goals conceded in seven league games. That’s Real Sociedad’s defensive record coming out of the international break, and it’s the number that shapes Sunday’s meeting with Deportivo La Coruna at the Reale Arena.
Kick-off is at 16:15 Paris time on Sunday 11 October, La Liga matchday eight. The two sides are level on ten points. Depor sit seventh on goal difference, La Real eighth. Nobody had the promoted side ahead of the Basques in October, but here we are.
Deportivo’s return to the top flight has been the hard-to-beat kind. Two wins, four draws, one defeat. Ten scored, eight conceded. They went to Villarreal and won 3-2, they’ve drawn at Malaga and Getafe, and they still haven’t lost away from home. For a side that finished second in the Segunda last season, that’s a serious start.
Real Sociedad are harder to read. Three wins, three defeats, one draw. They lost 4-1 at the Bernabeu, lost 3-0 at home to Atletico and lost their Europa League opener at home to Bournemouth. They also won 3-2 at Valencia with a last-gasp Ander Barrenetxea winner just before the break. Up and down, every week.
History sits with the hosts. Real Sociedad have won the last three league meetings, the most recent a 5-0 thrashing back in February 2018, and Depor have won just once in the last ten. But that was a different Depor. Is this the week the past stops mattering? On the evidence of this season, it might be.
Real Sociedad: goals at both ends and Oskarsson suspended
Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side don’t do quiet afternoons. Four of their last five games have gone over 2.5 goals. In five of their last six league outings, they’ve conceded. The only clean sheet in that run came in a 0-0 with Celta Vigo.
Home form doesn’t bear close inspection either. One win, one draw and one defeat at the Reale Arena in the league, and that defeat was a 3-0 beating by Atletico. Add the 2-1 European loss to Bournemouth on the same pitch and the picture is clear. Anoeta isn’t a fortress this year.
The squad problems don’t help. Alvaro Odriozola and Jon Aramburu are both injured, which strips out two right-backs at once, and Hector Fort is a doubt. Orri Oskarsson is suspended after his red card in the win at Valencia. That’s the full-back position and a striker gone in one go.
Mikel Oyarzabal is still waiting for his first goal of the season. Two assists, zero goals. The captain will start, but the burden falls on Barrenetxea, Luka Sucic and Goncalo Guedes to create. Real Sociedad have scored nine league goals in seven games. Respectable. Not ruthless.
There’s also a fixture pile-up looming. Union SG away in the Europa League next week, Lillestrom later this month. Matarazzo needs points now, and he needs a defence that stops leaking. That’s a problem he hasn’t solved since August.

Deportivo La Coruna: unbeaten on the road and Angelino back
Three away league games, zero defeats. Antonio Hidalgo’s side drew 1-1 at Malaga, won 3-2 at Villarreal and drew 1-1 at Getafe. They’ve scored in every single one of those trips.
That’s the key detail. Depor don’t park the bus and pray. They go after games, and ten goals in seven matches is more than third-placed Real Betis have managed. Credit where it’s due: that’s a promoted team playing like it belongs.
The last outing before the break was a 1-1 home draw with Betis, the third-placed side in the division. Before that came the only league defeat, a narrow 1-0 loss at home to Sevilla. Tight margins. Never thrashed.
Angelino returns after serving a suspension, which is a real boost down the left. The bad news is up front. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Zakaria Eddahchouri and Marc Casado are all injured, and Noe is a doubt with an ankle problem. That’s a lot of experience missing.
So Bil Nsongo is likely to lead the line. Can he carry it? He doesn’t need to do it alone. Depor’s goals have come from across the team, and against a back four missing two right-backs, the wide areas look ripe. This side won’t come to Anoeta to sit in.
Probable lineup Real Sociedad: Remiro; Beitia, Martin, Sarr, Gomez; Herrera, Soler; Barrenetxea, Sucic, Guedes; Oyarzabal
Probable lineup Deportivo La Coruna: Roman; Navarro, Gimenez, Noubi, Quagliata; Soriano, Amatucci; Cruz, Jensen, Hernandez; Nsongo

Our prediction: Both teams to score (odds around 1.80)
Real Sociedad concede. They’ve done it in five of their last six league games and in three of their four competitive home matches this season. Deportivo score. They’ve found the net in every away game so far. Put those two facts side by side and the market picks itself.
The home side should create plenty too. Depor’s back line has been solid, but La Real have scored in four of their last six league games, including three goals at Elche and three more at Valencia. With Barrenetxea, Sucic and Guedes running at a promoted defence, a goal at the other end is more likely than not.
The result itself is close to a coin toss, with the home win priced around 1.66. Both teams to score at around 1.80 is the cleaner angle. Two open sides, two attacks that travel, and a home defence missing two right-backs. Back goals at both ends.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
