Real Sociedad vs Celta Vigo: a clash of attacking output 
One goal in three rounds for Celta, seven shots on target in total: the numbers tell the story already. Real Sociedad host the Galicians on Thursday, 3 September at 21:00 at the Reale Arena.
Sociedad’s Basque side took a while to get going, with two awkward away trips to start. A 1-0 defeat in Seville against Betis, then a 4-1 hammering at the Santiago Bernabeu against Real Madrid.
The first home match changed the mood. A 2-1 win over Espanyol got Pellegrino Matarazzo off the mark, and he comes into this one on the back of a Copa del Rey title won last season.
Celta arrive with a far more worrying record. One point from nine, a 0-0 draw in Valencia and then two straight defeats, including a 2-0 loss to Athletic Bilbao in front of their own fans on Sunday.
That start leaves Claudio Giraldez’s men in 16th, even though they have just made two straight European qualifications. They are one of six teams still without a win in La Liga.
The head-to-head record adds another layer. Real Sociedad are unbeaten in their last eight meetings with Celta, with six wins and two draws.
The latest clash, back in January, ended 3-1 to Sociedad, with a Mikel Oyarzabal brace. That is the sort of marker that matters when two teams arrive in such different shapes.
Real Sociedad have finally found their footing 
Those first two defeats were misleading: they came at the Benito Villamarin and the Bernabeu. The first game at the Reale Arena gave a truer read on the Basque side.
Against Espanyol, Oyarzabal laid on two assists. Ander Barrenetxea and Orri Oskarsson did the rest, with the Icelander netting his first goal of the season.
Matarazzo’s home record is the strongest part of the case here. Twelve league games in charge at the Reale Arena: six wins, four draws and only two defeats.
The squad is close to full strength. Alvaro Odriozola remains a long-term absentee and Pablo Marin should miss out with a hamstring issue.
Take Kubo and Yangel Herrera are the rotation options in a packed early-season schedule. Hector Fort, whose permanent move from Barcelona has just been completed, should be in the group.
So Sociedad move forward with a clear attacking axis, built around Oyarzabal and Oskarsson. Against a shaky Galician back line, that is a clear edge.

Celta have stopped scoring and they are paying for it 
One goal in three rounds, seven shots on target: only two teams have done worse in that area since the season kicked off. The problem in Galicia is first and foremost up front.
The 0-0 at Mestalla hinted at a defensive base. The next two home games at Balaidos showed that was wishful thinking.
Marcos Alonso’s red card turned the Osasuna game on its head, with Celta leading before slipping to a 2-1 defeat. A week later, Athletic Bilbao left with a clean 2-0 win.
Their home form had already gone backwards last season. Since the start of the previous campaign, Celta have lost 10 of their 21 league matches at Balaidos, with six wins and five draws.
Borja Iglesias, still out with a muscle injury, has now missed the last two games. His absence is a big blow for an attack already short on answers.
Marcos Alonso returns to the three-man defence after serving his ban, and Couhaib Driouech, signed from PSV Eindhoven, should start on the bench. Giraldez is getting bodies back, but not much in the way of belief against Sociedad.

Our prediction: Real Sociedad to win
Six wins in 12 home league games under Matarazzo, and an opponent who has scored only once in three rounds: the balance of power is pretty clear. The Reale Arena is still a tough place for Celta to handle.
The eight-match unbeaten run against the Galicians strengthens the case further, as does Borja Iglesias’ absence up front. Oyarzabal, who made the difference twice against Espanyol, has enough quality to hurt a centre-back pairing that has just shipped four goals in two matches.
The most likely outcome is a Basque win. We are backing Real Sociedad.
