Two years. That is how long the hole in the middle of Real Madrid’s midfield has been staring back at everyone at the Bernabeu. Toni Kroos walked away, and nobody replaced what he did. Not Cucurella, not Dumfries, not Konate, not even Bernardo Silva, all of them brought in this summer. Real do not want another body in the squad. They want a brain. The successor was obvious. The decision was not
Best player at the last World Cup. Ballon d’Or winner in 2024. Captain of Spain. On paper Rodri never needed selling to anyone. The resistance lived inside the club’s own corridors, where this file has crawled along for two years. Real have wanted a footballer who sets the tempo, shields every loose ball and drags a whole team along with his positioning. Rodri answered that description from the very first day it was written. Florentino Perez just could not quite talk himself into it.
Why the president kept saying no
Two things held him back. One was the calendar attached to the player: he is 30, and the injuries have stacked up over recent seasons, exactly the kind of detail that keeps a president who plans a decade ahead awake at night. The other was money. Valued for a long time near 100 million euros, the deal simply looked too rich, even for Real. Perez wanted youth, a signing built to last ten years rather than three.
The push came from elsewhere. Big Spanish sponsors tied to the club spent two years lobbying for the move, convinced that Rodri’s standing at home would turn the transfer into a marketing goldmine.
Then Mourinho walked in
The summer flipped the whole thing over. Jose Mourinho arrived in the Madrid dugout and made his list clear on day one. He wanted a profile the squad did not already own, a player who could balance the side and ride out the ugly ten-minute spells that every match throws up. Rodri, close to his best again and openly chasing a second Ballon d’Or, suddenly suited Perez as well.

There is an older clue too. A few months back Rodri had already given a nod to Enrique Riquelme, the man running against Perez for the club presidency. Whoever ends up holding the keys to the Bernabeu, the destination in his head has not changed.
He has left breadcrumbs in public, as well. Back in late March, asked about his Atletico Madrid roots, he shrugged off any doubt about his future in one line: “You cannot turn down the best clubs in the world.”
So the pieces sit there on the table. A Ballon d’Or in the bag, a homesick 30-year-old, a president who has finally reached for his wallet, and a City side that can no longer name its price. Whether Madrid actually turn that into a signature is the one thing still hanging in the July air.
