La Liga: Real Madrid close in on Oscar Naasei

A seventh addition, but not for the first team

Real Madrid are not done yet. After six arrivals and 225 million euros spent this summer, the Merengues are close to wrapping up a seventh signing. This one has nothing to do with Jose Mourinho’s dressing room.

According to AS, Oscar Naasei is set to join the Casa Blanca for around 10 million euros. The 21-year-old centre-back plays for Granada and is under contract until June 2028. He would initially be sent to Castilla, the club’s reserve side.

A full season in Spain’s second tier

The numbers explain why. The Ghanaian played 39 matches last season in the Segunda Division, scoring once. That points to a near-ever-present role at just 20, in a league known for its defensive demands and relentless schedule.

That is exactly the sort of background Real want in their young overseas signings. Not raw talent fresh out of an academy, but a player who has already been through a long season and the weekly pressure to deliver.

10 million euros for a 21-year-old centre-back with that kind of experience? In the Spanish market, that counts as a pretty sensible buy.

A 225 million euro summer

Naasei would add to an already hefty intake. Yan Diomande has left RB Leipzig, Marc Cucurella has arrived from Chelsea, Carlos Espi from Levante, Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan, Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool and Bernardo Silva from Manchester City.

Six signings, several of them established internationals, for a 225 million euro outlay. Real have rebuilt their defensive spine and midfield in a single transfer window.

Naasei, though, would come in through the back door. Castilla has been a staging post for a few players who eventually made the leap. It has also left plenty of others behind.
