Gomis and Nusa settle it early
Martin Demichelis walked out at the Red Bull Arena this afternoon with his job under open discussion in the German press. Leipzig had lost in Como on Wednesday in their Champions League opener, and the club had already been moved to issue a statement about their manager’s future. Forty-seven thousand eight hundred people came to see how he would respond.
Tidiam Gomis answered part of it in the 17th minute, finishing with his right foot after Ezechiel Banzuzi opened the defence. Antonio Nusa made it two on 28 minutes with a strike of his own. Hamburg had a yellow card inside six minutes through Nicolas Capaldo and very little else to show for the opening half.

Nusa turns provider after the break
Assan Ouedraogo went off in the 35th minute and Christopher Nkunku came on, a substitution that would matter later. Hamburg changed things at the interval too, Terem Moffi replacing Yussuf Poulsen, and for twenty-five minutes the score held.
Then Leipzig scored three times in five minutes. Willi Orban headed home from a Nusa delivery on 72, Nkunku struck two minutes later with Nusa again the supplier, and Romulo, on the pitch for three minutes after replacing Gomis, made it five on 77. Nusa left the field on 78 with a goal and two assists next to his name.
Referee Florian Badstubner had one more decision to make. A late Hamburg effort went to VAR deep into stoppage time and was ruled out.
Two clubs heading in opposite directions
The win lifts Leipzig to six points and a goal difference of plus six, back in touch with the leading group after a rough opening fortnight. Nkunku, back at Leipzig on loan from Milan, has a goal to show for his afternoon.
Hamburg sit bottom with nothing at all. Zero points, zero goals, twelve conceded across three fixtures. No other side in the division has failed to score this season, and only Borussia Monchengladbach, beaten three times out of three with twelve goals against, is anywhere near them at the foot of the table.
For Demichelis, this was the kind of afternoon that buys time rather than settles anything.
