Rayo Vallecano vs Celta Vigo: a club in turmoil against the meanest defence in La Liga
Rayo Vallecano’s home game against Athletic Club on 10 October lasted 25 minutes. The referee, José María Sánchez Martínez, stopped it after supporters threw paper planes and small plastic balls onto the pitch in protest at the club’s president, Martín Presa, and no new date had been fixed at the time of the reports. That’s why Rayo have played one game fewer than everyone else going into Saturday’s visit of Celta Vigo.
The protests explain a lot about the mood around the Estadio de Vallecas, where kick-off is 15:15 UK time (16:15 in Spain). Rayo have played part of this season at Butarque, Leganés’ ground, and their most recent home game, against Elche on Saturday, ended in a 3-0 defeat.
That result left Beñat San José’s side 16th on nine points from nine games, with 12 goals scored and 20 conceded. Only Racing Santander have conceded more in La Liga, and Rayo are level on points with Getafe, who currently sit in 17th, the last place above the drop.
Claudio Giráldez’s Celta are ninth with 12 points, have drawn six of their ten league games and have conceded seven goals, the fewest in the division. They also won 2-1 at Celtic in the Europa League on 22 October, with Javi Rodríguez scoring twice in three minutes after Mika Baur had put the hosts ahead.
Both teams have a Copa del Rey tie before this game. Rayo travel to Recreativo de Huelva on Tuesday night, while Celta go to Salamanca UDS on Wednesday, and Giráldez has already left Marcos Alonso, Febas, Javi Rueda, Jutglà, Hugo Álvarez and Williot Swedberg out of that squad.
Rayo Vallecano: Camello’s goals, Ciss suspended and a 3-0 home defeat by Elche
Elche’s first two goals at Vallecas both came from the penalty spot, Federico Redondo and Fer Niño scoring inside the first 36 minutes. Pathé Ciss then missed a penalty for Rayo on 39 minutes, and Germán Valera added a third after the break.
Ciss also picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in that game, which means a suspension for Saturday. That takes a regular starter out of midfield, and San José hasn’t yet said who will partner Unai López there.
Augusto Batalla broke his tibia and is out until January, Luiz Felipe ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and won’t be back before May, and Andrei Rațiu is out with a muscle problem. Emil Audero, who arrived on loan from Como at the start of September, has taken over in goal.
Sergio Camello is the reason Rayo still score. He has seven of their 12 league goals, and he trained normally on Monday after a muscle problem, along with Jorge de Frutos, who has also recovered. Álvaro García is next with three, including the opener in the 1-1 draw at Getafe on 19 October.
Rayo have conceded in all nine of their league games. The sequence since mid-September reads 4-1 down at Real Madrid, 2-1 against Espanyol, 1-1 at Osasuna, 1-1 at Getafe and 0-3 against Elche, so the goals against have come steadily rather than in one bad afternoon.

Celta Vigo: seven goals conceded in ten games and six draws, without Borja Iglesias
Celta’s league games have produced 17 goals in total, an average of 1.7 per match. Two of their last three league outings finished 0-0, at Elche on 11 October and at home to Real Betis on Sunday, and the 2-1 home win over Alavés in between was settled by second-half goals from Jutglà and Javi Rodríguez before Hugo Novoa’s late reply.
Giráldez sets up with a back three, and against Betis it was Javi Rodríguez, Yoel and Marcos Alonso in front of Radu, with Javi Rueda and Javi Galán as wing-backs. Galán took a knock in that game that left Celta short for a spell in the first half, and his fitness is the main question for Saturday.
Borja Iglesias has a soleus injury and is out until December, which partly explains why Celta have scored only ten league goals. Carl Starfelt and Álvaro Núñez are both out with muscle injuries until mid-November, and Miguel Román and Jones El-Abdellaoui have knee problems.
Javi Rodríguez, a centre-back, has been their most dangerous player in recent weeks, with three goals across the Alavés and Celtic games. Hugo Álvarez scored against Juventus in the Europa League on 15 October, a game Celta lost 2-1 to a goal in stoppage time, and he’s among the players being rested for the cup tie.
The last two meetings went in different directions. Celta won 3-0 at home in January 2026 through Carreira, Bryan Zaragoza and Javi Rueda, while the previous game at Vallecas in September 2025 ended 1-1, Borja Iglesias scoring for Celta and Jorge de Frutos equalising.
Probable lineup Rayo Vallecano: Audero; Balliu, Lejeune, Sadick, Pedrosa; Unai López, Ciss’s replacement not confirmed; Álvaro García, De Frutos, Isi Palazón; Camello.
Probable lineup Celta Vigo: Radu; Javi Rodríguez, Yoel, Marcos Alonso; Javi Rueda, Moriba, Febas, Javi Galán; Hugo González, Hugo Álvarez, Pablo Durán.
Free La Liga Prediction: Rayo Vallecano vs Celta Vigo
Our prediction: Under 2.5 goals (1.81)
Celta concede fewer goals than anyone in La Liga, average 1.7 goals per league game and have been involved in two goalless draws in their last three league matches. Under 2.5 goals is priced at 1.81, and that’s where I’d go rather than picking a winner in a match the market sees as close to even.
Rayo’s numbers are the risk, with 32 goals in their nine league games. But 12 of those came in the defeats by Barcelona and Real Madrid, Rayo have scored once in their last two games, and they’ll be without Ciss, Rațiu, Luiz Felipe and goalkeeper Batalla.
Celta are also without Borja Iglesias, have scored ten in ten, and Giráldez has kept his regular starters out of the midweek cup squad so they’re fresh for this one. Under 2.5 goals, at 1.81.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
