Rabbitohs vs Broncos: two big names looking to kick-start their season
With the highly anticipated State of Origin Game 2 just days away, the NRL serves up a cracking clash between the Rabbitohs and the Broncos.
On paper, both sides came into the season with much bigger ambitions. But heading into the halfway point, they find themselves in a tricky spot and badly need a boost of confidence.
With a bye week coming straight after this one, there’ll be no resting and no second-guessing.
Both teams should leave everything out there.
The Rabbitohs have had it rough
The trip to the Sea Eagles already looked a tough one.
Missing several key men, the Rabbitohs knew they would need a big performance if they were to pull off a shock.
For one half, they matched the challenge perfectly.
Only 10-8 down at the break, Wayne Bennett’s side stayed in the fight and even hinted at an upset.
But after the restart, a few small details swung the contest.
A couple of questionable calls, sharper work from the opposition and, above all, a lack of control in the big moments gradually tipped things Manly’s way.
The 28-14 loss looks about right given how the match played out.
With just 45% possession, the Rabbitohs spent much of the game on the back foot.
They also lost the field-position battle, making far fewer gains than their opponents.
Even so, South Sydney are probably better than that result suggests.
There’s still enough experience and quality in the squad to hit back quickly.
The Broncos are in a rough patch
Over in Brisbane, the questions are piling up.
The shock defeat to the Titans has left a mark and fuelled plenty of debate about the reigning champions’ current state.
What makes that loss so worrying is that the Broncos looked in control for long spells.
They had more possession, posted an excellent completion rate and kept making ground with the ball.
Nearly 700 post-contact metres, eight line breaks and an average of 9.6 metres per carry.
And still Brisbane found a way to lose.
For several weeks now, the Broncos have looked like a side capable of dominating stretches without turning that superiority into points.
That lack of killer instinct is becoming a pattern.
As if things weren’t awkward enough, State of Origin also strips Brisbane of several major names.
Payne Haas, Reece Walsh and Kotoni Staggs are all out, while Pat Carrigan and Gehamat Shibasaki are injured.
In other words, Michael Maguire will have to patch things together to field a competitive side.
Try it for $0.99.
NRL prediction Rabbitohs vs Broncos
Rabbitohs to score over 27.5 points
The Broncos arrive badly weakened by State of Origin calls and a clutch of important injuries.
That could open the door for a Rabbitohs attack that can still put together some slick passages when it gets quality ball.
With Cody Walker pulling the strings and Alex Johnston as dangerous as ever near the line, South Sydney have enough firepower to put the Brisbane defence under pressure.
Against a Broncos side short on certainty right now, the Rabbitohs should have what it takes to clear the 27-point mark.
in your pocket.

First, a word on our predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We offer an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal from nowhere… and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks nailed on, it really isn’t. And yes, that means you can lose. In fact, you will at some point.
- The best approach is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t touch money you need for everyday life. And above all: don’t chase losses, because that rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If you feel it’s taking up too much space in your life, making you angry or putting you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, talk to a specialist service. That’s what it’s there for.
- At the end of the day, responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and never goes away, no matter how good the analysis is.
- Important reminder: betting is banned for minors and must follow the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast, leading to money losses, family tension and addiction. Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They have no legal force. Plain and simple: you cannot rely on them to demand anything if a bet loses.
Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know when it is written. But in the meantime, a team sheet changes (like the Rabbitohs’ one, for example), a player gets injured, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly become outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your role
Before you bet, make sure betting is legal where you are. If it isn’t, that’s your responsibility, not ours.
Responsible gambling first
We can’t say it enough: play in moderation. If you struggle to keep control, don’t wait to get help. We cannot be responsible for compulsive or excessive use of the information published on the site.
Legal age
mathodds content is for adults only. By browsing here, you confirm that you are old enough by law to place a bet.
