146 passes, and three points
Chelsea completed 146 passes against Brighton on Sunday and won 4-3. That is the fewest they have managed in any Premier League match since Opta started counting in 2003-04. They had 25.9% of the ball. They also had the game won by the 32nd minute, which is why Brighton spent the rest of it passing to each other.
The wider numbers from the opening two rounds say something odd is happening. Sides that dominate possession are winning 30% of their matches. Sides that see less of the ball than their opponent are winning half.

Four winners, four teams outpassed
Chelsea were not alone. Newcastle took three points at Tottenham on 42.5% possession. Hull won at Coventry with 31.5%. Sunderland beat Fulham on 41.4%.
None of that is accidental. Against a well-drilled press, playing out from the back is a coin flip you take in your own third, and the modern press is very good at winning coin flips. Drop deeper, keep the shape tight, then go long and fast when the ball turns over. It works often enough to be a plan rather than a fluke.
English football rediscovers this idea roughly once a decade. Leicester built a title on it in 2015-16, handing opponents the ball and then punishing them with it. Whenever pressing gets sharper faster than build-up play does, the same trade reappears.
Arsenal and City are still doing it the other way
Both have won twice, both with over 60% of the ball. That is the part everyone skips when this stat does the rounds. Possession has not stopped working. It has just become expensive, and only a handful of squads can still pay for it.
Sample size deserves a mention too. Two rounds is 20 matches. A gap between a 30% and a 50% win rate at that scale can rest on three results going the other way, and Opta have said the pattern may well evaporate by next weekend.
Chelsea have a separate problem to sit with. Five goals conceded in two games, three of them on Sunday with Emi Martinez behind the defence. Twelve goals have been scored in their two matches, more than any other club in the league has been involved in.
