Watford vs Southampton: a season opener loaded with baggage at Vicarage Road 
Southampton begin the 2026-27 season on minus four points. The punishment is the direct fallout from the spying scandal that cost the club a place in the play-off final.
The Saints had already seen off Middlesbrough in the semi-finals, winning 2-1 on aggregate after extra time. Being shut out of the final slammed the door on what looked like a clear path back to the Premier League.
Watford, meanwhile, head into this first game under Alessio Dionisi, appointed this summer. It is the club’s fifth straight season in the second tier.
Last season was a mess for the Hornets, with four different managers and a 16th-place finish, their worst showing since 2005 on an equal basis. They closed out the campaign with five straight defeats.
Both sides opened their season with EFL Cup wins last week. Watford knocked out Crawley Town thanks to a 99th-minute Marc Bola goal, while Southampton beat Colchester United 2-0.
Kick-off is at 13:30 at Vicarage Road, live on Sky Sports. It is a shop window both teams enter with very different ambitions.
Watford want to get a broken machine moving again. Southampton want to show the points deduction changes nothing about their status as promotion contenders.
Watford: an open rebuild and a worrying back line 
Three wins and eight defeats from their final 15 matches last season under Edward Still. That run forced the change in the dugout this summer.
The Hornets finished with 57 points, a total that falls well short of the club’s stated ambitions. The board has handed the project to Alessio Dionisi.
The Italian’s pre-season has done little to calm nerves: one win, one draw and two defeats in friendlies. The win over Crawley Town, a fourth-tier side, needed a goal in the 99th minute just to avoid penalties.
The biggest problem sits in the middle of defence. Mattie Pollock and Kevin Keben are the only senior centre-backs currently in the squad.
In midfield, Imran Louza is expected to start despite uncertainty over his future, alongside Hector Kyprianou or Edoardo Bove. The Moroccan remains the player Dionisi is building around.
Up front, there is real competition with summer signing Iker Bravo, Luca Kjerrumgaard, Kwadwo Baah and Othmane Maamma all in the mix. Nestory Irankunda, who is expected to leave, will not be involved.
Watford should have enough to score. Keeping Southampton out for 90 minutes looks a very different job entirely.

Southampton: a settled squad and a point to prove 
Sixty-eight points from 33 league matches since Tonda Eckert arrived in November. That was the pace that dragged Southampton from danger to fourth place.
That progress was wiped out by the Spygate scandal, with Eckert admitting he had watched training sessions of three opponents, including Middlesbrough in the play-offs. The punishment takes the form of a four-point deduction this season.
The squad, though, has barely changed. Shea Charles and Ross Stewart are the only notable exits, while Divin Mubama and Lewis Dobbin have arrived as reinforcements.
The loans of Daniel Peretz and Cyle Larin have also been made permanent. Both are expected to start, one in goal, the other up front.
Pre-season could hardly have gone better, with three wins from three friendlies, followed by the 2-0 EFL Cup win over Colchester United. Larin and Romeo Akachukwu got the goals on the day.
The attacking depth is fearsome for this division, with Ben Brereton Diaz, Leo Scienza, Dobbin, Tom Fellows, Finn Azaz, Mubama and Cameron Archer all fighting for places. In midfield, Kuryu Matsuki and Flynn Downes will be tasked with covering for Charles’ exit.
Southampton start on minus four, yes, but they are doing it with a side that spent six months operating at the level of the Championship’s best.

Our prediction: Southampton to win
Watford only have two senior centre-backs and finished last season with five straight defeats. Against an attack featuring Larin, Azaz, Dobbin and Scienza, with Mubama and Archer waiting in reserve, the imbalance is obvious.
Southampton have made it four wins from four this summer, across friendlies and cup action, with a squad that is almost unchanged from the one that collected 68 points in 33 league games under Eckert. The four-point penalty only adds to the urgency to get moving now.
The Saints have the stronger squad and a clear edge after the spring they have just lived through. Back Southampton to win at Vicarage Road.
