MLB: Pirates cut Marcell Ozuna loose after six-month misfire

Six months. That is the whole story. The Pirates are releasing Marcell Ozuna on Wednesday, according to multiple US outlets.

The contract came together over the winter. One year, $12 million. It never clicked. To fill the spot, Pittsburgh is calling up second baseman Ronny Simon from Triple-A, where the 26-year-old has raked: a .330 average, seven homers, 63 RBIs and 33 steals across 99 games.

The numbers quit on him

Ozuna simply stopped producing. A .203 average, eight home runs, 29 RBIs and 80 strikeouts in 70 games this season. Nowhere near the bill.

Rewind two years and the picture flips. In 2024 he cranked 39 homers and drove in 104 runs for the Braves. The bat has gone quiet since.

What now

The resume still carries weight. Three-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger, 304 career home runs. At 35, Ozuna goes looking for one more chance somewhere else.
