The MLS restart could hardly have come at a better time for Philadelphia. After a miserable first half of the season, the Union will be hoping to draw a line under it and make a fresh start in front of their own fans. New York Red Bulls, though, are a much tougher proposition, and the gap in confidence between these sides is impossible to ignore.
While Philadelphia are still chasing their first home win, New York arrive on much stronger footing. The visitors sit near the top of the Eastern Conference and will see this trip as a chance to strengthen their push for the playoffs.

The coaching change has not yet fixed a side that is going through one of the bleakest spells in its recent history. Ryan Richter is now in temporary charge, tasked with jolting a group that barely resembles the team that used to compete near the top of MLS.
The heavy defeat against Inter Miami before the break summed things up perfectly. Shipping six and still scoring four tells you there is still attacking talent there, but the defensive mess is far too big to make any real run of results possible.
At Subaru Park, the concern is growing. Philadelphia are still waiting for their first home win of the season. Their last three matches at home have all ended level, which says a lot: they can hang around, but they cannot seem to land the killer blow.
The Red Bulls want to keep it rolling 
Over the past few weeks, New York have looked a lot more convincing. Michael Bradley’s men are unbeaten in four league games and appear to have rediscovered a bit of steel, especially when the pressure is on.
Their win over Sporting Kansas City just before the pause backed that up. The Red Bulls are conceding less, managing the rough patches better and taking their chances more cleanly. Away from home, they are also showing more backbone than they did last season.
There are a few fitness concerns on the New York side, especially Emil Forsberg if the Swede does not recover in time. Even so, Jorge Ruvalcaba comes in on a high after his brace last time out and should be one of the main threats to Philadelphia’s back line.

Philadelphia are still struggling to find any sort of rhythm. There have been a few encouraging spells, but the Union remain the only team in the conference yet to win at home this season. Their last three games at Subaru Park have all finished level, which is a pretty clear sign they still lack the confidence to turn tight matches their way.
New York, by contrast, come into this restart with a lot more belief. Their four-match unbeaten run points to a more balanced side, one that can defend properly before picking off the spaces left by the opposition. Even on the road, the visitors now look much better equipped to take something from this one.
Given the current form of both teams, the Red Bulls leaving with at least a point feels like the most likely outcome. The double chance in New York’s favour looks the smartest angle here.
