A slump that keeps getting longer
Diane Parry is running out of ways to explain it. The Frenchwoman went out in the first round of the WTA 500 in Tokyo this morning, beaten 7-5, 6-1 by Spain’s Cristina Bucsa. It is her sixth defeat in a row.
On paper she was the one with the edge. Parry sits 34th in the world, Bucsa 42nd. The numbers on court told another story. Parry landed only 54 percent of her first serves against 74 percent for Bucsa, and she piled up 22 unforced errors to her opponent’s 12.
The opening game set the tone. Parry saved two break points just to hold, then traded breaks with Bucsa in the middle of the set. At 5-5 the Spaniard broke again, served it out and closed on her second set point.

One set, nine points
The second set was a collapse. Parry won only nine points in the entire set and never found a way back into the match.
Her last win came on August 31, in the first round of the US Open. She has not taken a set from anyone since. The run is her worst since the summer of 2023, when she lost seven straight, so one more defeat would tie that mark.
For Bucsa it is a clean start to the week. She now waits for her second-round opponent in Tokyo while Parry heads into the autumn swing with confidence at a low.
