Paris Saint-Germain vs AS Monaco : the only Ligue 1 club still unbeaten and yet to concede

AS Monaco have played two Ligue 1 matches and have not conceded a goal. They are the only team in the division in that position after two rounds.

That record puts the Monaco side top of the table with six points. Paris Saint-Germain, by contrast, have two and sit 12th.

The two sides meet on Friday 4 September at 21:05 at the Parc des Princes. So it is the leaders against the reigning champions, with a four-point gap already in place.

PSG have drawn both of their opening games, at Rennes and Lille, by the same 2-2 scoreline. In both, they had to come from behind.

The Lille game on 28 August tells the story best: 2-0 down in the 84th minute, Paris dragged themselves level with two goals in stoppage time. Vitinha on 90+1, Marquinhos on 90+5.

Monaco, meanwhile, have built their six points on narrow, controlled wins. A 1-0 victory at Le Havre, then a 2-0 home win over Marseille on 30 August.

The numbers are stark: four goals conceded by Paris in two rounds, zero by Monaco. That gap is what this match is really about.

The table already reflects the split. Monaco are top with six points, Paris 12th with two.

Monaco beat Marseille 2-0 in their last outing, on 30 August at Stade Louis II. That is the standout result of their season so far.

Paris still have not won after two games and find themselves behind clubs like Troyes, Paris FC and Angers. Not a normal sight for the champions.

Paris Saint-Germain : four goals scored, but no wins

PSG have scored four goals in two matches and still have not won a game. Both fixtures finished 2-2.

Ferran Torres scored both Paris goals at Rennes, in the 71st and 82nd minutes. The Spaniard is the club’s top scorer so far this season.

At Lille, the response came from two central players. Vitinha cut the deficit right at the end of normal time, then Marquinhos nicked the point in the 90+5th minute.

That habit of striking late is the main positive from Paris’s start. Three of the club’s four goals have come after the 70th minute.

The club also lost Bradley Barcola this summer, sold to Liverpool for 123 million pounds in the 2026 summer window. That meant the attack had to be reshaped from the opening rounds.

The key issue, though, is at the back: four goals conceded in two games, with two shipped in each one before the 85th minute. Against a team that has given nothing away, Paris will need to fix that if they do not want to spend a third straight game chasing it.

For now, Ferran Torres is the only Paris player to have scored more than once. His two goals at Rennes account for half of the club’s total.

The other two strikes have come from Vitinha and Marquinhos, neither of them an out-and-out forward. The spread of goals is unusual, to say the least.

Paris have conceded twice in each of their two league games. Four goals let in across two matches is the same tally as Toulouse, who sit 16th.

AS Monaco : two clean sheets and a flying Paris Brunner

Monaco have won both Ligue 1 matches without conceding a single goal. Three scored, none conceded, six points on the board.

The first win was built on an Eric Dier goal in the 14th minute at Le Havre. The scoreline did not move for more than 75 minutes after that.

The second says more about how this side works. Against Marseille, Paris Brunner struck in the 13th and 53rd minutes to finish off a clean 2-0 win.

Brunner now has two goals in two games and has quickly become Monaco’s main attacking reference. Both of his goals came when the team was already ahead, or just had the edge.

Scoring early has been the common thread in both wins: Monaco took the lead in the 14th and 13th minutes. That lets them shut the game down and tighten the screws.

There is a caveat, though, and it is the opposition. Le Havre and Marseille do not offer the same attacking threat as Paris, and Monaco have not yet faced sustained pressure over 90 minutes.

Monaco are the only Ligue 1 side to win both of their matches. Paris FC, Lyon, Lille, Troyes and Rennes are next on four points, each with a win and a draw.

Only two scorers make up Monaco’s total. Eric Dier once, Paris Brunner twice.

That reliance on Brunner is the main attacking weakness for the leaders. Two of their three goals this season have the same name on them.

PSG have scored four goals in two games and have not thrown in the towel, even when 2-0 down at Lille with six minutes left. The attacking output is there; the defensive work is not.

Monaco arrive with two clean sheets, but those came against Le Havre and a Marseille side beaten 2-0. The Parc des Princes is a very different test over 90 minutes.

Paris get their first win of the season and kick-start their league campaign.
