Panathinaikos vs CSKA Sofia – Free Conference League Prediction

Panathinaikos vs CSKA Sofia: first in Europe, first in Greece, and five home wins from five

Andrews Tetteh scored inside the first minute against AEK Athens on Sunday night. Santino Andino added a second four minutes after the restart, and Panathinaikos held out for the last 20 minutes with ten men in front of more than 40,000 at the Olympic Stadium.

That 2-0 win leaves Jacob Neestrup’s side on 24 points, two clear of Olympiacos at the top of the Super League. They’re also first in the Conference League table after two rounds, with six points, seven goals scored and two conceded.

Kick-off on Thursday 5 November is 20:00 UK time, in the same stadium. CSKA Sofia arrive 23rd with one point, after a 2-1 home defeat to Monaco and a 2-2 draw at Nordsjaelland.

I don’t see a lot of doubt about the outcome here, and the prices agree: Panathinaikos 1.47, the draw 4.80, CSKA 6.68. It’s a short price, but it’s still above what the home record deserves.

No previous meetings between these clubs are on record. CSKA have been strong in Bulgaria, and I’ll come to that, but their European record is the one that matters on a Thursday in Athens.

Panathinaikos: 90% wins over ten games, and 3.00 a game at home Panathinaikos

Panathinaikos have won nine of their last ten matches in all competitions. Five of those were at home and they won all five, scoring 3.00 a game.

The European numbers are just as direct. They beat Borac 2-1 on the opening night, then went to Almaty and won 5-1 on 22 October, with Cyriel Dessers scoring twice and Vicente Taborda, Kings Kangwa and Rastoder adding the rest.

Sunday’s win over AEK ended the champions’ unbeaten league run. Andino set up Tetteh, scored the second himself and was named man of the match, while Inaki Pena saved from Zini on 86 minutes to protect the clean sheet.

Their defence hasn’t had much to do lately. Over ten matches they’ve conceded 0.60 a game with 0.91 expected against, and on the road they’ve kept clean sheets in three of five.

The one blemish from Sunday is Kangwa’s 70th-minute red card, given after a VAR review. Whether that affects his European availability wasn’t confirmed at the time of writing, but Neestrup has plenty of cover, with Rastoder, Louza and Salah-Eddine all coming on against AEK.

Expected goals back the scorelines: 2.11 for and 0.91 against over ten games, rising to 2.58 for at home. Dessers came off for Taborda after 57 minutes on Sunday, so he’s had some rest before Thursday. Tetteh had five goals in all competitions by the end of September, the most in the squad at that stage.

CSKA Sofia: unbeaten in 11 league games by mid-October, one point in Europe CSKA Sofia

CSKA were second in the Bulgarian league on 11 October with 27 points from 11 games, eight wins, three draws and no defeats. Markus Gisdol has been in charge since 29 September, after Hristo Yanev left on 9 September and Daniel Morales covered in between.

Joel Zwarts had eight league goals by then, with Ioannis Pittas on six and Santiago Godoy on three. That’s a forward line with goals in it, and it scored twice at Nordsjaelland on 22 October, Godoy opening after eight minutes.

That game ended 2-2, with Solet equalising two minutes from time after CSKA had trailed. A week earlier Monaco won 2-1 in Sofia, which is a fair result against a side that has taken maximum points in this competition.

The overall numbers over ten matches look solid: 2.10 goals scored, 1.00 conceded, 6 wins. Away from home they’ve conceded 1.17 a game and taken 2.33 points per game, though most of that came domestically.

Europe has been a harder place for them over the years. Their defeat to Monaco was their 22nd in 29 European group or league-phase games, and they’ve yet to win in this phase. I’d want a lot more than a 2-2 in Denmark before trusting them in Athens.

CSKA’s ten-game expected numbers are strong too, at 2.31 for and 1.30 against, and they’ve scored in nine of those ten. Both sides scored in six of them, which is why a Panathinaikos clean sheet isn’t part of my case. Sensi and Bruno Jordao had two league goals each by mid-October.

Our prediction: Panathinaikos to win (1.47)

Panathinaikos have won all five home games in their last ten, at 3.00 goals a game. CSKA have one point from two league-phase matches and no win in this competition.

CSKA’s domestic record and Gisdol’s short time in charge make them more dangerous than the table suggests, and Panathinaikos played a derby on Sunday with ten men for 20 minutes. Their form is still the strongest in the competition.

I’d back Panathinaikos to win at 1.47. They’re first in two tables, they beat AEK without conceding, and they scored five away from home the last time they played in this competition.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
