MLB: Padres bet on King at Coors Field, where he owns a 9.53 ERA

Nine wins in 10 games, and a wild-card spot hardening

Nine wins out of 10. San Diego arrives in Denver at 83-69 with a postseason berth looking sturdier by the day.

The Padres hold a 3.5-game cushion over Arizona (80-73) for the National League’s third wild card. There is still something bigger on the table, though. Chicago leads at 85-68, 1.5 games clear, and Philadelphia sits at 84-68, a single game up on San Diego.

Wednesday went the easy way, 9-3 over Colorado. The four-game set closes Thursday, first pitch in the morning local time.

Coors Field has never been kind to Michael King

King takes the ball at 11-9 with a 3.03 ERA. Opposite him, Tanner Gordon is 1-4 with a 5.55 ERA.

Then you look at where this is being played. King has pitched twice at Coors Field in his career. No wins, one loss, a 9.53 ERA. His last visit was April 23, 2024: six runs, four earned, eight hits, three and two-thirds innings, a 7-4 loss.

His broader book against Colorado is unremarkable. Five appearances, four of them starts, 1-2, 5.54 ERA. On July 28 he walked off without a decision after four runs on six hits across six innings.

One start cuts against all of that. April 13, 2025, in San Diego. King threw the only complete game and shutout of his career, two hits allowed. The opponent was Colorado.

The Rockies are chasing a smaller number

Colorado stands at 56-96. Seven wins in the last 10 would keep them out of a fourth straight 100-loss season.

Two rookies have kept the year from turning into pure wreckage. First baseman TJ Rumfield is hitting .300 with 15 home runs and 69 RBIs across 146 games. Cole Carrigg, up since June 9, is at .266 with 10 homers and 45 RBIs in 83 games while handling the outfield and the occasional turn at shortstop. Tuesday he went 4-for-4 with two homers and five RBIs to end an eight-game skid. Gordon would like a quieter version of him on Thursday.
