San Diego holds firm in San Francisco
Five doubles, two triples, twelve hits. That is not the San Diego Padres most people know. Yet that is how they opened a three-game set at Oracle Park, beating the Giants 7-5 overnight for a fifth win in a row. San Diego now holds a half-game edge on Arizona for the National League’s last wild card spot, 79-68 against 79-69, with three weeks left on the calendar.
The damage came from the bottom of the lineup. Dustin Harris and Freddy Fermin, hitting eighth and ninth, put together four hits and four RBIs between them. Jackson Merrill chipped in a double and two singles. For a club that usually wins by leaning on its starter and its bullpen, that kind of offensive burst was a change of scenery.

Five runs in the third, and the Giants never recovered
Bryce Eldridge had San Francisco in front early with an RBI single in the first. Harris and Fermin answered in the second. Then came the third. Five runs crossed, on a Harris triple, a Fermin double and a two-run double off the bat of Xander Bogaerts that turned a close game into a chase.
Giants starter Anthony Molina (3-1) lasted three innings. Seven runs, nine hits, and he was gone. Yunior Marte stopped the bleeding with five scoreless innings of relief, long enough for Rafael Devers to pull San Francisco back within two on a grand slam in the fifth, his 36th home run of the year.
Miller loads the bases, then finishes it
Robbie Ray (12-8) got the win in a return to the park he pitched in back in 2024. The line was messy: five runs, four hits, four walks and five strikeouts across five innings. Yuki Matsui, Adrian Morejon and Bradgley Rodriguez followed with three shutout innings between them.
The ninth got uncomfortable. Mason Miller put a runner on every base with two outs before striking out Eldridge for his 35th save. San Francisco fell to 62-86, days after sweeping the Cardinals at home.
