San Diego puts Houston on the ropes
San Diego rolled past Houston 7-2 overnight in Sunday Night Baseball at Petco Park. The Padres crushed four home runs in the game. They have now won 12 of their last 16 and are still within one game of a National League postseason spot.
Fernando Tatis Jr. got the party started. With two outs in the fourth inning, he launched a ball 421 feet into the brick warehouse in left field at Western Metal Supply. His three-run shot, his 11th of the season, put San Diego up 4-2.

Vasquez holds the line
Jackson Merrill had already gone dead centre with his 18th homer of the year off Cristian Javier. Gavin Sheets added another in the sixth, his 15th, as soon as reliever AJ Blubaugh took over. Austin Hays finished the job. In his first outing in a San Diego uniform, the reserve clubbed a two-run homer.
On the mound, Randy Vasquez got it done. The right-hander (8-6) went five innings. He gave up Daulton Varsho’s two-run homer in the second, then retired his final 10 batters. Three relievers followed him and allowed just two hits the rest of the way.
Momentum matters
The win carried real weight. Houston had been leading the American League West going into the night. San Diego took two of the three games in the series. The playoff race is tightening in the National League, and the Padres are hitting their stride at exactly the right time.
