Fernando Tatis Jr. added three hits. The Padres were clicking on all cylinders. It was only their fourth win in 12 meetings with Los Angeles this season. This time, the script flipped.

Ohtani returns, but without the fireworks
Shohei Ohtani was back. Knee, biceps, two injuries, a long wait. He finished with one hit in four trips and drew one walk. No magic. Yoshinobu Yamamoto lasted six innings on the mound. He gave up four runs, but only two were earned. Andy Pages and Teoscar Hernandez each had three hits for the Dodgers. It still wasn’t enough.
San Diego cut its magic number to one to clinch a wild-card spot. A playoff berth is now within touching distance. It would be a third straight season, something the franchise has never done before.

Chicago is right there. So is Philadelphia. Just one game separates the three teams in the National League wild-card race. San Diego is in front for now. The regular season is nearly over. Every win matters. Every loss does too.
