One sentence that says more than a summer of statements
“He did not threaten to resign, but we were not far from breaking point.” Stephane Richard said it on RMC on Wednesday, hours after Marseille’s transfer window slammed shut, and it landed harder than anything the club has put out in writing since June.
Bruno Genesio is still in the job. That much was never really in doubt by the end. What Richard confirmed is how close it came to going the other way.

A window that only ever went one direction
Genesio walked in this summer and, by his own admission, found the books in worse shape than he had been told. Then the selling started. Quinten Timber left for Crystal Palace in the closing hours, the last name on a list that kept growing week by week.
The resignation talk really took hold when Igor Paixao’s name went on the market. Genesio batted it away publicly at the time. Richard has now filled in the rest: no ultimatum, but not much room left either.

“I was the one who went to get him, like Greg (Lorenzi). We had to bring Genesio in, and it was not straightforward given the situation. He knew the broad outline of everything,” Richard said.
Sixty years old, Lyon-raised, and willing to run a dressing room through an austerity drive. That profile does not turn up often.
