The Oakland Athletics opened this series with a 4-6 loss, but it was far from one-way traffic. The home side punched back after falling 0-4, and in the eighth inning Shea Langeliers trimmed the gap with a solo homer. For game two, the Oakland Athletics will hand the ball to JT Ginn, a starter who looks more reliable right now than Matthew Liberatore. On balance, this matchup tilts toward an Oakland win: after a shaky start, the hosts have a real chance to reset the tone.

Oakland’s home record is still slightly under water at 8 wins and 9 losses, but the California club stays competitive and keeps games close far more often than not. In the series opener, the hosts dug themselves a hole after a rough first inning from Jeffrey Springs. Still, the Athletics’ bats answered quickly: Nick Kurtz and Shea Langeliers drove in three runs in the second. Langeliers later also celebrated the 100th homer of his career. Jacob Wilson’s absence hurts, but the lineup has enough depth to keep Liberatore under steady pressure.
St. Louis have shown a few cracks 
The visitors continue to impress on the road, with 14 wins and only 7 defeats. In the first meeting, the Missouri side came out flying, scoring four runs before the hosts even made an out, then held that lead to the finish. JJ Weatherholt stood out again, working a walk to start before launching a two-run shot in the sixth inning. That said, the visitors did show a few flaws: after that blistering start, the offence never fully shut the door, and the bullpen was put under real pressure late on.

Oakland Athletics to win
St. Louis have already proved they can handle life on the road, which makes an Oakland pick look a bit bold at first glance. Even so, this feels like the right spot for the home side to hit back. They stumbled early, yes, but they never folded and forced the opposing bullpen to work hard. For this second meeting, the Athletics should have a firmer base to lean on: JT Ginn has been far more consistent this season and looks the kind of pitcher who can avoid another ugly opening.
Liberatore’s ERA, meanwhile, is trending the wrong way. If the California side can get through the first two innings without major damage, then the runs from Kurtz, Langeliers and the middle of the order should do the rest. Backing Oakland to win is the cleanest read on this game.
