New York City FC draw 1-1 with Toronto FC at Yankee Stadium in MLS

Football: Fernandez strikes but Toronto hold NYCFC 1-1

Fernandez keeps scoring, NYCFC keep dropping points

Nicolas Fernandez converted a ninth-minute penalty at Yankee Stadium on Saturday and looked to have set New York City FC on their way. Toronto FC had other ideas. Djordje Mihailovic bundled home deep in first-half stoppage time, and the visitors held on for a 1-1 draw.

The penalty came after Richie Laryea fouled Agustin Ojeda inside the box. Fernandez stepped up and finished, his 13th goal of the season, which moved him level at the top of the MLS scoring charts with Peter Musa and Hugo Cuypers.

Toronto stop the bleeding, barely

Toronto struck back before the interval. Daniel Salloi forced a save, the rebound dropped kindly, and Mihailovic tucked it away from close range. The goal ended a first half New York had controlled and shifted the mood at the break.

The point does little to fix Toronto’s season. They have now gone 13 games without a win, a run that keeps them anchored near the bottom. A draw at Yankee Stadium counts as progress only against that backdrop.

Where it leaves them

New York City FC will feel they left two points on the turf after leading. Fernandez keeps delivering, yet the finishing around him stalled once Toronto found their footing. For the visitors, one point travels home and the search for a win rolls into another week.
