Nottingham Forest vs Manchester City: Glasner’s “no more hugs” meets two City defeats in a row
Oliver Glasner said there would be “no more hugs” after Nottingham Forest lost 2-0 at Brentford on Saturday, and that the players must either buy in or leave. Four defeats from five had left him with little else to say, and Forest are 19th with six points from nine games, one above bottom-placed Sunderland.
The next game gives him no easy way back. Manchester City come to the City Ground on Saturday 7 November, kick-off 17:30 UK time, second in the table on 21 points, and that’s after Enzo Maresca’s side have lost back-to-back league matches for the first time this season.
City’s record explains the gap between the clubs and also why this fixture isn’t quite the mismatch it might have been a fortnight ago. They opened with seven straight league wins, then lost 2-1 at Aston Villa on 24 October and 1-0 at home to Brighton on Saturday, and Brighton also knocked them out of the Carabao Cup on penalties in between.
City’s midweek adds another layer. They play RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday night, which leaves them around 69 hours between kick-offs and a trip back from Germany, while Forest have had a full week since Brentford to work with Glasner’s demands.
The last league meeting finished 2-2 at the Etihad on 4 March. The market still has City at 1.71, the draw at 4.10 and Forest at 4.50, and I think that price leaves room for City’s tired legs without losing sight of the difference in quality.
Nottingham Forest: one win in ten, with Igor Jesus and Savona out
Forest have won once in their last ten games in all competitions, and the league win came at Aston Villa on 12 September. Coventry beat them 1-0 at the City Ground a week later, and Glasner has since spoken about rebuilding the club from the bottom up.
Saturday’s defeat in west London showed the difficulty at both ends. The first goal was a Nikola Milenkovic own goal from Dango Ouattara’s pass, the second was Igor Thiago’s on 76 minutes, and at the other end James McAtee hit a post and Ryan Yates headed over from a few yards out.
Goals have been the longer problem. Dan Ndoye leads the side with two in the league, Morgan Gibbs-White has one goal and two assists, and Liam Delap has one. Igor Jesus also has one but he’s out injured, and Ndoye is a doubt.
The defence is short too. Savona, the first-choice left-back, is missing and Dominguez is doubtful. Ola Aina came on for Daniel Munoz after 36 minutes at Brentford, and Delap may start with Gibbs-White in support.
Glasner was hired in the summer after Forest used four different head coaches last season, and he insisted on signing just three senior players. Forest’s hierarchy are reported to be behind him for now, and they’ve treated his reaction after Brentford as a welcome sign.

Manchester City: Haaland’s nine goals, and Semenyo’s absence after two defeats
Erling Haaland has nine league goals, and Rayan Cherki has added four more with two assists. Antoine Semenyo had two goals and three assists before his injury, and he won’t be available on Saturday.
The Brighton defeat was closer than it sounds. Yasin Ayari scored from close range on 11 minutes after a low cross from Diego Gomez, and Bart Verbruggen made seven saves, including tipping Iliman Ndiaye’s shot onto the post. Cherki, who started on the bench, also went close after coming on.
Maresca has been changing things at the back and in midfield. Marc Guehi was dropped against Brighton, and Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez have been starting ahead of Ayyoub Bouaddi in the middle. Mateo Kovacic is back in the squad, which gives him another option if he rotates after Leipzig.
The bigger picture remains strong. City’s goal difference of plus 10 is the second-best in the division behind Brighton’s plus 17, and they’re three points behind Arsenal with nine games gone. Two league defeats in a row haven’t changed that.
Phil Foden has one goal and two assists, Jeremy Doku one and one, and Ndiaye two assists. That spread of contributors is why a team without Semenyo can still go to a side in the relegation zone as a clear favourite.

Our prediction: Manchester City to win (1.71)
I’d back Manchester City to win at 1.71. Forest have won one of their last ten games in all competitions and have one league win all season, and they’ve lost Igor Jesus and Savona with Ndoye also a doubt.
City’s midweek trip to Leipzig is the obvious risk, and a side that’s just lost two league games in a row won’t arrive with the confidence of its first seven weeks. The 2-2 at the Etihad in March also shows Forest can take points off them.
Haaland’s nine league goals are more than Ndoye, Gibbs-White, Delap and Igor Jesus have between them. A reaction from Glasner’s players may make this harder for an hour, but I expect that gap in finishing to decide it.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
