Switzerland: Okafor quits the Nati for as long as Yakin stays

Two words, and then everything else

The caption said “Danke Schweiz”. Underneath it, Noah Okafor had written the longest statement of his career.

The 26-year-old striker is stepping away from the Swiss national team indefinitely, and he attached a condition to it. He will not play again while Murat Yakin is head coach.

“These are the hardest lines I have had to write in my career so far,” he posted on Thursday afternoon. The Leeds forward then shut down the obvious theory before anyone could raise it: “This decision has nothing to do with my playing time.”

“Promises were not kept”

What Okafor describes is not a row. It is a collapse in trust. “Certain things happened that hurt me deeply. The trust was damaged. Promises were not kept.”

He names one episode, the Algeria match. “I was pushed away from the team, even for small mistakes, without anyone explaining why.” That phrase, without anyone explaining why, runs through the whole statement.

He does not make himself the only victim in it. “I know that in the past I haven’t always done everything right.” His relationship with Yakin had been fraying for a while, which makes this less a sudden exit than the last step of something that had been coming.

Switzerland lose something they cannot copy

Twenty-six caps since 2019, two goals. The scoring return is thin. His running from wide is not, and there is nobody in the squad who does it the same way.

He was there at the last World Cup, when Switzerland made the quarter-finals before Argentina ended it, one of the better runs the Nati have put together in recent memory.

At 26 this is not retirement. It is a door left open, with someone else holding the handle.
