Serie A: Nkunku on leaving Milan, “I did not see it coming”

He accepted it. He still does not understand it

Christopher Nkunku sat down in front of reporters on Thursday and made one thing plain. Leaving AC Milan this summer was not his idea, and nobody warned him it was coming.

“To respect a decision, you do not always have to understand it. It happened out of nowhere, I did not see it coming either,” the France forward said.

He never named Ruben Amorim. He did not have to. Dropped out of the Milan boss’s plans, Nkunku was on the market before he had finished working out why.

Three million now, twenty-seven in June

RB Leipzig took the loan for three million euros, with a buy option sitting at 27 million.

Newcastle wanted him too. He picked Germany instead. One club was offering the Premier League, the other was offering ground he had already covered.

Look at the numbers and the choice explains itself. Between 2019 and 2023 Nkunku played 172 games for Leipzig, scored 70, set up 56 more. Saxony is where he built the profile that got him to England in the first place.

What each side actually gets

The staff has turned over, so has the squad, but the reference points around him are close to the ones that made him a problem for defenders three years ago.

Milan cut wages off the books and collect no meaningful fee. The real decision lands in June, when Leipzig either pay the 27 million or hand him back.

Nkunku’s own brief is shorter. Score again, and get back in the France squad.
